You will be contacted if a spot opens up! \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome back poets Mary Brancaccio and Ellen Goldsmith for another poetry writing workshop on Friday\, February 16\, 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. Breaking the Silence: Writing Toward Healing and Resilience is grounded in the idea of writing as a tool to process grief\, illness and loss. Through poems and writing prompts\, we will explore the concepts of absence and presence\, hiding and revealing\, speech and silence. The goal is to help participants develop ideas\, begin drafts of poems\, and learn how to address common obstacles to writing about personal experiences. Useful strategies and poetic craft moves will be presented. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Brancaccio is the author of Fierce Geometry\, published by Get Fresh Books Publishing. Her poetry has appeared in Naugatuck River Review\, Minerva Rising\, and Edison Literary Review\, Adana Literary Journal\, among others. She has an MFA in Poetry and is a Pushcart Prize nominee. Brancaccio’s poetry is also included in Writing the Land: Maine and Writing the Land: Northeast\, as well as two international anthologies of poetry. Her website is ghostgirlpoet.com. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllen Goldsmith is the author of Left Foot\, Right Foot\, Where to Look\, Such Distances and No Pine Tree in This Forest Is Perfect\, winner of the 1997 Slapering Hol Chapbook Contest. Her poems have been published in numerous journals including The Healing Muse\, Intima\, Bellevue Literary Review as well as the anthologies Wait: Poems from the Pandemic and Enough: Poems of Resistance and Protest. Professor Emeritus of the City University of New York\, she lives in Cushing Maine.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Pyrocene: Ecological Implications for a Planet on Fire \n\n\n\nThe Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, February 15 at 6:00 PM on Zoom with David Govatski\, former fire management office for the US Forest Service.  \n\n\n\n“Pyrocene” is a term used to describe the human use of fire and how it impacts our planet. The term was first coined in 2015 by Stephen Pyne of Arizona State University. Fire can be a friend or foe. This program will describe how humans first harnessed fire and eventually switched to burning fossil fuels. We will then discuss forest fire ecology\, zombie forests\, prescribed fire\, fire weather\, and related topics to better understand the ecological implications of a planet that seems to be on fire. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual program on Zoom. He retired after working for the US Forest Service for over 30 years. He served as a fire management officer on a national interagency incident management team for eight years. David’s first job in the Forest Service was as a fire lookout on the Devil’s Head Lookout on the Pike National Forest in Colorado. He worked on the Redmond Hotshot firefighting crew on the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon and worked on numerous large forest fires\, including the 1988 Yellowstone Fires. He also worked on multiple prescribed fires in his career. David has maintained a strong personal interest in the study of fire ecology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Kate McMahon\, Global Slavery Historian at the National Museum of African American History & Culture for her talk\, “Freedom’s Woods: Peterborough and African Americans in Midcoast Maine\, 1776-1865” on Sunday\, February 11\, at 2:00 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. This event is part of the 2024 Speaker Series co-sponsored by the Camden-Rockport Historical Society and is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nThe historic African American community of Peterborough was founded by Amos and Sarah Peters in Warren\, Maine. Amos and Sarah built a community based upon kinship and freedom-making in the woods of rural Maine that existed until the early 20th century. This talk will explore the history of Peterborough\, and the broader history of African Americans in Maine during the 18th and 19th centuries. \n\n\n\nAmanda Shelmerdine\, the town of Warren’s sexton\, will also be present. She currently leads research on an exhibition that will open at the NMAAHC in December 2024\, titled In Slavery’s Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World. She received her B.A. in Art History and M.A. in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine. She completed her Ph.D. in History at Howard University in 2017. Her dissertation was entitled The Transnational Dimensions of Africans and African Americans in Northern New England\, 1776-1865. Her current research explores New England’s connections to and complicity in the illegal slave trade and colonialism\, 1809-1900. She is committed to exploring the living legacies of slavery and the slave trade in the present day and interpreting this history for a broad public through frequent public speaking engagements and scholarly production. She is the designer of the Farnsworth Museum Gardens. Barber knows about the intimate relationship between people and plants—sun to soil\, seed to root\, plant to harvest\, harvest to human\, human to human. It’s that connection that drew her to the practice of horticultural therapy (HT)\, defined by Barber as\, “the transformation that happens when we work with the earth to improve well-being. She adds\, “plants\, like people\, are resilient; they can heal\, they can recover\, rehabilitate\, rejuvenate\, and prefer to live in communities. They bounce back. When we think about designing a garden\, we so often think about nurturing the plant\, it’s also about how that plant is nurturing us.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "A Child Within" Photography by Amy Wilton — Exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes artist and photographer Amy Wilton for a photography exhibit titled “A Child Within” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of February*. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet Amy during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, February 3\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n\n“This body of work was literally born from my womb in the year 2000. A visual chronicle of the life of my two children\, Emma and Nigel\, and their friends\, it documents them from their most boisterous moments to times of quiet reflection. It is in those quiet times that I sense something greater\, something spiritual\, embracing them. I consider these photographs a form of self-portraiture. In each image\, I find my best and worst traits reflected back at me through their attitude and gestures.  \n\n\n\nThere is a delicate balance a mother walks when she chooses to maintain her own identity while raising her children. For me\, this work validates my time spent as a mother and an artist\, in a way that is both concrete and emotional. It also gives me permission to be engaged with my children while still adding to my body of work. I consider this a permanent work in process\, as are both my children and myself.”  \nAmy Wilton\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Wilton is a local fine art and commercial photographer. In 1997\, she moved to Camden and received her MFA in Photography from Maine Media College. Amy has documented a generation of mid-coast families including her own. She has contributed to many books by Down East Press and self-published a monograph called A Child Within in 2008. She is currently working on an updated version. Her fine art has been exhibited most recently at The Steel House in Rockland and at Cove Street Arts in Portland\, and her photographs at FotoNostrum gallery in Barcelona. Emma Wilton grew up in Hope and is studying modern dance at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City. \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. Kay Tobler Liss wrote for newspapers and magazines for many years\, and also taught literature on the high school and college level but had always wanted to write a novel. Her first novel\, The Last Resort published in July 2020\, combined both her passion for nature and for social justice for oppressed people. Her new novel\, Coming Home\, deals with how nature can not only save us as individuals but help us find common ground with other people and all living things.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes artist and photographer Amy Wilton for a photography exhibit titled “A Child Within” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of February*. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to view the exhibit and meet Amy during the Opening Reception on Saturday\, February 3\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This body of work was literally born from my womb in the year 2000. A visual chronicle of the life of my two children\, Emma and Nigel\, and their friends\, it documents them from their most boisterous moments to times of quiet reflection. It is in those quiet times that I sense something greater\, something spiritual\, embracing them. I consider these photographs a form of self-portraiture. In each image\, I find my best and worst traits reflected back at me through their attitude and gestures.  \n\n\n\nThere is a delicate balance a mother walks when she chooses to maintain her own identity while raising her children. For me\, this work validates my time spent as a mother and an artist\, in a way that is both concrete and emotional. It also gives me permission to be engaged with my children while still adding to my body of work. I consider this a permanent work in process\, as are both my children and myself.”  \nAmy Wilton\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Wilton is a local fine art and commercial photographer. In 1997\, she moved to Camden and received her MFA in Photography from Maine Media College. Amy has documented a generation of mid-coast families including her own. She has contributed to many books by Down East Press and self-published a monograph called A Child Within in 2008. She is currently working on an updated version. Her fine art has been exhibited most recently at The Steel House in Rockland and at Cove Street Arts in Portland\, and her photographs at FotoNostrum gallery in Barcelona. Emma Wilton grew up in Hope and is studying modern dance at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City. \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 30th at 6:30 p.m.\, the Camden Public Library\, in partnership with the Coastal Mountains Land Trust\, will host wildlife biologist and author Ron Joseph as he recounts the highlights of his storied career. Ron will be joined by novelist Paul Doiron who will discuss his latest book Dead Man’s Wake\, set in the Maine woods. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. To attend virtually\, register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sHs5HzFeRhKOab0SSDxyxw \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermits: Memories of a Wildlife Biologist\, Ron shares his stories of growing up in rural Maine\, working as a wildlife biologist\, and meeting Mainers like retired dairy farmers Ruth and Martin French of Dover-Foxcroft\, who repurposed their barn’s empty cow stalls into a wildlife rehabilitation center. The couple specialized in rescuing orphaned bear cubs\, providing solitary cubs with teddy bears as temporary surrogate litter mates while biologists scrambled to find sow bears willing to adopt the orphans. The book includes humorous stories\, such as one about the time he had to count piles of deer dung on designated mile-long lines and encountered a woman who bluntly asked\, “So you went to college for that?” Other stories border on the absurd\, including one of an influential legislator who pressured Ron to spray concentrated wolf urine on 30 miles of Route 201 in a harebrained waste of taxpayer money to supposedly reduce moose-vehicle collisions. Many of the book’s stories have previously been published in Down East\, Maine Boats Homes and Harbors\, Bangor Daily News\, Moosehead Messenger\, PenBay Pilot\, and elsewhere. \n\n\n\nNovelist Paul Doiron\, best-selling author of the Mike Bowditch series of crime novels set in the Maine woods\, will join Ron for another one of their tag-team book talks. Paul will share about his most recent novel\, Dead Man’s Wake. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Ronald Joseph was born in Waterville\, Maine. Spending childhood summers on his maternal grandparents’ nearby dairy farm\, he became fascinated with songbirds\, often spending hours perched on stacks of hay bales in a post-and-beam barn watching swallows dart in and out to feed their nestlings. Ron’s mother encouraged his love of birds by giving him a copy of Peterson’s Field Guide to Eastern Birds. The book’s colored plates and range maps revealed a fascinating world of birds just outside his front door. His farm chores\, from milking cows to collecting chicken eggs\, were often interrupted by sprints through the barnyard to identify Indigo Buntings\, Chestnut-sided Warblers\, Brown Thrashers\, and dozens of other songbirds. His first bull moose sighting would also leave a deep impression: chased by his grandparents’ Border Collie Bonnie\, the moose ran between the farmhouse and barn\, ducked beneath a clothesline\, and escaped across a hayfield with a bra attached to his antler. Birdwatching\, though\, became Ron’s passion\, inspiring him to pursue a B.S. degree in wildlife conservation and a M.S. in zoology. In 1978\, he began a 33-year career\, first as a state wildlife biologist\, and later as a federal biologist specializing in the restoration of eagles\, peregrines\, and other endangered species in Maine. Now retired\, Ron volunteers for the Kennebec Land Trust\, participates in the Maine Bird Atlas\, a statewide citizen science project evaluating songbird population trends\, and leads Maine birding trips. This is his first book.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view the exhibit and meet the artists during the Closing Reception on Sunday\, January 28\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. This is your last chance to see the exhibit! \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library welcomes midcoast artists Allegra Kuhn and Liz Kalloch for a joint exhibit titled “Tête-à-Tête: Two Approaches to a Single Conversation” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of January. \n\n\n\n\nVigil\, charcoal and fine pastel on paper\, 60″ x 30″\, Liz Kalloch\n\n\n\nMadame Devereux\, collage on board\, 10” x 8” Allegra Kuhn\n\n\n\n\nTête-à-Tête is a conversation between two artists: one playful\, lyrical and exuberant; the other provocative\, performance-based and assertive. The commonalities in their works that cross into conversation are the insistence of color\, the articulation of line and the fundamentals of composition. Kuhn and Kalloch use these three principles of artmaking in different ways\, with great effect. Both artist’s work is grounded in and an extension of feminist thought\, bringing forward different aspects of its expression and is why these two artist’s works resonate so well together and speak to each other in such an interesting way. \n\n\n\nAllegra Kuhn is a collage artist whose intuitive juxtaposition of forms\, patterns and color evoke the joyful cutouts of Matisse and more recently the artists of the Pattern and Decoration Movement of the 1970’s and 80’s\, which had its origins in the concurrent feminist movement\, with artists such as Miriam Schapiro. Like the P&D artists\, who pushed back against the rigor and severity of Minimalism and Conceptual Art\, Kuhn asks us to see the world in a less confrontational way\, inviting in a more serendipitous and spontaneous expression. Kuhn compares her work to the flower arrangements of Japanese ikebana artists\, bringing nature and humanity closer together in a celebration of both. She has exhibited throughout New England and has created public works of art for Waterfall Arts and Coastal Mountain Land Trust\, both in Belfast\, Maine. \n\n\n\nLiz Kalloch is an abstract multi-media artist whose charcoal and pastel works on paper use arousal as the purveyor of intent. The work’s intersections\, interactions and inquiries are emotionally raw\, but inescapably and beautifully human. Kalloch states “I am most interested in where lines cross and speak to each other\, and how color can amplify or dissipate the tension in those lines. I often think of my work as maps—maps that delineate both an external and internal geography. They document where I’ve come from\, where I’ve gone\, and how I move through these transitions and observe them.” The antecedent to this kind of work are artists like Egon Schiele or any of the German Expressionists from the early 20th century. Kalloch’s drawings do not hold back; they are fiery\, explosive and self-consciously dynamic. Kalloch has exhibited throughout the United States and in Europe. Her work is in both private and public collections. Her first public work of art was created in 2023 for the Here is Magic mural at Waterfall Arts in Belfast\, Maine.

DESCRIPTION:Who knew that dance could be enjoyed into our older age?!  Rita Swidrowski\, a senior and an avid Zumba dancer\, teaches beginner dance classes for active older adults at the Belfast YMCA. She will lead a variety of dances with cha cha\, twist\, boogie\, salsa\, mambo steps & more to a variety of tunes. No dance experience is necessary\, & steps are shown & cued. Repetition makes for easy following & modifications are shown. Each person is encouraged to follow his or her own body’s needs & styles. Studies show that movement & exercise are major factors in staying healthy & fit into older age! He can read their tracks like the news and figure out what the critters have been up to. \n\n\n\nKirk takes care of MCHT conserved lands on Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. That means taking care of trail and forestry needs and monitoring easements. He connects with island residents through environmental education\, volunteering\, and outreach programs. He also compiles wildlife sightings on Vinalhaven in his entertaining blog\, Vinalhaven Sightings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. This event kicks off a 2024 Speaker Series co-sponsored by the Camden-Rockport Historical Society and is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in the shadow of the Brooklyn Navy Yard\, Irene M. Drago developed a keen interest in every kind of watercraft at an early age. Before moving to Maine\, she worked for the Defense Department as a Russian analyst\, earned a Master of Arts degree in Spanish language and literature\, and taught at the high school and college level. Her debut novel\, Daughters of Long Reach\, was a 2018 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Winner\, First Novel and led to a sequel\, The Maine Point. More recently\, Lavinia Wren and the Sailmakers is a 2023 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist\, Regional Fiction. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host the third event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, January 11\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Parker Gassett\, a Camden resident and representative of UMaine\, will present on “Achieving Climate Resilience in Coastal Communities” and provide an overview of available resources to enhance Camden’s understanding of and preparedness for climate change. \n\n\n\nGassett will also introduce the Community Resilience Workbook\, which documents climate resilience initiatives in Maine and provides the tools and resources to help facilitate community climate action. He will also provide information on the newly established Maine Climate Science Information Exchange office. Audience members will have the opportunity to express their priorities and feedback to the Community Resilience Working Group of the Maine Climate Council. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions Award: Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Research by a graduate student for a regional campaign on ocean acidification. This work continued to become his doctoral research on managing ocean climate change in the Gulf of Maine. He received the 2023 Maine Fishermen’s Forum Distinguished Service Award for supporting the virtual sessions of the conference in 2021. He is the co-editor and a primary author of the 2023 Maine Community Resilience Workbook\, a framework and how-to guide for climate change assessment\, collective climate action\, and achieving community resilience outcomes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) is a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. In this presentation\, representatives from The Nature Conservancy\, a global conservation and climate action organization\, will discuss a model project for lasting water source protection in India and its connections to Maine’s own Sebago Clean Water Fund. \n\n\n\nGirija Godbole\, manager of the Ghod River Water Fund in southwest India\, will speak directly from India on Zoom about the work of her team in Maharashtra\, southeast of Mumbai. Introducing her and explaining water funds and Maine’s connection to the project will be Kate Dempsey\, State Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ghod River basin covers part of the districts of Pune and Admednagar and includes 472 villages\, four towns over an area of 4\,574 square kilometers\, two-thirds of which is agricultural.  There are an estimated 350 small and medium industries in the area. Like other water funds\, the Ghod River Project focuses on a watershed and operates at local\, national and global levels by helping build a coalition of stakeholders in freshwater systems and mobilizing funding streams that will sustain conservation long into the future. Among the purposes of the Ghod River Fund is to form a citizen-scientist coalition\, including farmers and tribal communities supporting stewardship of the basin and ensuring equitable access to water. \n\n\n\nWatersheds sit at the crux of the global climate\, biodiversity and water crises\, so investment in them can move the needle on many of our most urgent societal challenges at once. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\n\nTrained in anthropology\, Girija Godbole\, Ph.D.\, has worked in the environment and development sector for more than two decades. Prior to joining TNC\, she worked with the Centre for Policy Studies at IIT Bombay. Girija has conducted qualitative research on topics ranging from gender\, sanitation\, participatory forest management\, tribal welfare\, social impacts of land sale and ecosystem services. More recently she completed an empirical study on agricultural tenancy under the Nudge Research Innovation Grant and a study of domestic violence under the British Academy research grant. Girija did her M.Phil. and Ph.D. from University of Cambridge and is a recipient of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She has also done a training course in environment education from the Centre for Environment Education\, India. Passionate about issues of environment\, equality\, gender\, and power\, Girija believes in collaborative and participatory approach and has substantial experience in stakeholder engagement. She also does voluntary work with a Pune based organization Jeevan Sanstha. Girija is a LEAD (international network on Leadership for Environment and Development) Fellow.” \n\n\n\n\n\nKate Dempsey is the State Director of The Nature Conservancy in Maine. She has been in that role since 2016 and has been with The Nature Conservancy since 2003 working primarily in the federal policy arena.Under Kate’s leadership\, TNC Maine is making significant investments in reducing and managing the effects of climate change by joining together science and policy with placed based actions which are restoring and conserving the connections between the forests\, rivers and ocean in Maine \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 37th Annual Camden Conference\, “INDIA: Rising Ambitions\, Challenges at Home” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18\, 2024.
