The Monday Morning Book Club meets in the Picker Room and on Zoom* of the Camden Public Library on the 4th Monday of each month at 10:00 am. For the month of March\, the group will meet entirely on Zoom. \n\n\n\nSummary: Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life\, living in Boston\, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon\, raising a beautiful son\, Asher\, was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown\, living in the house she grew up in\, and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. When Lily Campanello and her mom relocate to Adams\, New Hampshire\, for her final year of high school\, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while\, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school\, and Lily can’t help but fall for him\, too. Then one day\, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead\, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in him\, and as the case against him unfolds\, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her.

SUMMARY:My Father\, the Spy – A Family Story (Mother was Also a Spy) – A Conversation with Les Fossel\, Jr. at the Camden Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique event presented in partnership with the Camden Public Library and the Camden Conference\, featuring Les Fossel\, Jr.\, as he shares the remarkable story of his parents’ involvements in America’s first spy agencies during World War II. This event will take place on SUNDAY\, March 24\, at 2:00 p.m. in the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore there was the CIA there was the OSS\, and before the OSS there was the COI – the Coordinator of Information\, established under President Franklin Roosevelt as the first American spy agency in WWII – and Les Fossel\, Sr. was present at the creation. He was one of the first ten members of the new agency that would morph into the Office of Strategic Services in 1942. Fossel ran the Scandinavian operations of the OSS and was awarded the King Haakon Freedom Cross by the king of Norway after the war. Meanwhile his wife-to-be\, Virginia Van Brunt\, smuggled the first photos of Nazi concentration camps out of Germany. \n\n\n\n“My parents ran towards trouble\,” said Les Fossel\, Jr. who will tell his parents’ stories in what promises to be a fascinating afternoon at the Camden Public Library in the Picker Room on Sunday\, March 24 at 2:00 pm.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person at the Camden Public Library and on Zoom. Join us in person to participate in the full discussion. Fossel served in the fledgling OSS under General William “Wild Bill” Donovan; may have conducted secret negotiations with high-ranking Nazi officials over an early peace deal; and apparently knew how close the Nazi regime came to developing the first atom bomb. \n\n\n\nFossel hopes that his talk will attract people who might be able to flesh out his father’s story through discussion\, questions\, and curiosities that may further connect the dots. Camden has been a favorite retirement community for former State Department and CIA employees\, some of whom organized the first Camden Conference in 1987. Jones\, travel guide and storyteller\, has a deep appreciation for beauty and nature. She both feels and “hears” what the earth is saying on her walks through ancient sacred sites and landscapes. \n\n\n\nIn this elegantly written and deeply personal travel guide\, she takes readers on extraordinary walks through known and not-so-known places in Ireland\, England\, Jordan\, Wales\, and Scotland. With vivid and compelling details\, she has these vener­able lands tell their own stories by her willingness to be open to their messages. \n\n\n\nAs you travel with her\, you too may be curious about your own ancestral connec­tions to sacred landscapes. For over thirty years she worked in nonprofits as a counselor\, public speaker and grant writer. \n\n\n\nWith funding from the State of Maine\, she developed Storytelling with Heart\, a curriculum for professionals to create and use stories in their work with clients and/or communities. She traveled nationally with her curriculum\, developed a CD and published several articles on storytelling.     \n\n\n\nIn 2003\, she received an award from the National Storytelling Association for her contribution to the field of therapeutic storytelling. \n\n\n\nMargaret’s love for the Tarot grew out of her love for stories and undeniable curiosity in all things mystical. In 1982\, she began her studies with Rachel Pollock\, Mary Greer and Caitlin and John Matthews. She continues to be part of a peer support group of Tarot readers and offers readings to those who wish to be guided by the intuitive power of the cards.  \n\n\n\n At the age of nineteen\, Margaret began her travels abroad in search of her Welsh grandmother’s birthplace. That journey ignited her desire to visit sacred sites and encouraged her to search for stories that lay in the landscape. She now leads small groups on guided tours to sacred sites and shares the stories of the region. \n\n\n\nIn her spare time\, Margaret performs\, writes travel essays\, and continues her research on mythic stories.

SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: Costica Bradatan's "Dying for Ideas" - In Person & On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its exploration of philosophy as “an art of living\,” the Camden Philosophical Society will at this month’s regularly scheduled hybrid gathering — at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, March 19 — discuss portions of the 2015 book Dying for Ideas: The Dangerous Lives of the Philosophers\, by Costica Bradatan. All are welcome to participate\, either in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. \n\n\n\n If you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContemporary philosopher Costica Bradatan\, a native of Romania\, is currently a Professor of Philosophy at Texas Tech University. The work that we are reading addresses the complex nature of the relation of philosophy (and philosophers) to death. As he discusses in the book\, many philosophers have died for ideas\, from Socrates to Czech phenomenologist Jan Patocke\, who died in 1977 after being interrogated by the Czech secret police about his involvement in the Chapter 77 human rights movement. Simone Weil\, whose work the society discussed last year\, is another example. Bradatan also points out that philosophers have developed ideas about the meaning of death. \n\n\n\nGreg Fahy\, who selected the reading\, notes: “In a culture that appears to be allergic to talking about death\, it might be helpful to understand different philosophical approaches to death as part of an overall practical philosophy\, as part of living an examined life.” The reading proposed by Greg is the first 57 pages of Dying for Ideas. A link to an online version of the PDF is below: \n\n\n\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/13j1SWSJeqoN5DWwDTvmR9GmEZy1HwzDG/view

SUMMARY:Healing Handwork: "Drawing Messy Mandalas" with Robinsunne
DESCRIPTION:What needs to be healed? Our bodies? Our jobs? Our homes? Our psyches? Our relationships? Our experiences of joy? \n\n\n\nYou are invited to join an art class wherein we make mandalas – beautiful\, meditative circles – to engage our hands while our souls and minds listen patiently for the answers we seek. It is remarkable how this all works together. The introductory session\, which focuses on drawing mandalas\, will take place on Saturday\, March 16\, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM in the Picker Room. It is free and open to adults. While there\, if you want to go a little deeper\, you can sign up for the series of Embroidery gatherings. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is free and open to all\, but spots are limited. Please sign up ahead of time here: https://forms.office.com/r/a2p3WE1sN6 \n\n\n\nWhat do you want? We need to know\, but are trained to turn away. We get taught to ignore the “magic” of being a human. We get chastised\, or worse\, punished for spending time in our imaginations. And then we get sick\, or stuck in uncomfortable situations where we don’t have the space to enact our Gifts\, and have no discernable path back to our True hearts.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArt making is the path. (Well\, it is a path.) \n\n\n\nDrawing Messy Mandalas\n\n\n\nThis first class is easy. Perfection is not necessary. If you can draw little circles and triangles\, or even dots and dashes\, you can create wonder-full mandala pictures. The process will calm us down\, and engage all that magical human brain stuff that will lead us to where we really want to go. It is automatic. (!) \n\n\n\nSewing Messy Mandalas\n\n\n\nIn subsequent classes\, we will each embroider a mandala. If you can sew a running stitch\, that is enough. If you are a well-practiced embroideress this will be awesome fun. Sewing is where it all gets fabulous. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRobinsunne is a local mixed-media fiber artist. She has taught at the Library during some Jumpstart Januarys\, and exhibited in the past two Accordion Book Shows hosted by Amy Hand. She also contributes to and trades with the Artist Trading Card box at the front desk.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues with a presentation by bear biologist Randy Cross all about American Black Bear monitoring in Maine. This event will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom on Tuesday\, March 12\, at 6:30 PM. Randy Cross will present an overview of Maine’s long term bear monitoring program with the Maine Fish & Wildlife Department.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues with a presentation by Derek Yorks\, wildlife biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and co-founder of Wild Vision Systems\, for a presentation all about the snakes of Maine. Maine is home to 9 species of snakes\, from the small and secretive ring-necked snake to the (relatively) large and easily observed northern water snake. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife keeps track of all Maine snake species and is actively studying populations of Maine’s largest and rarest snake\, the State Endangered northern black racer. \n\n\n\n\nDerek Yorks\, M.S.\, Wildlife Biologist – Derek serves as the Department’s lead biologist on reptile and amphibian issues\, where he coordinates research and conservation efforts on several priority rare species.  Derek is currently focused on assessing the distribution\, status\, and management needs of black racers\, Blanding’s\, spotted\, and wood turtles in Maine\, coordinating Maine’s efforts with that of several working groups in the Northeast on these species.  Derek is also studying and guiding mitigation recommendations for the impacts of roadways on Maine’s reptiles and amphibians. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of the Center for Wildlife Studies is to provide accessible environmental education worldwide and promote wildlife conservation through science. \n\n\n\nLearn more about CWS by visiting their website: centerforwildlifestudies.org \n\n\n\nLearn more about the “Wild Maine” series here: centerforwildlifestudies.org/wild-maine

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to Ken’s Retirement Reception on Sunday\, February 25\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Reading Room. The event will be a celebration of the Library as well as a recognition of Ken Gross’s tenure at CPL. There will be live music\, refreshments\, and good company! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter twenty years of service\, Ken Gross will be retiring from the Library staff at the end of February\, 2024. Ken started at the Library as part-time program director\, planning\, promoting\, and hosting all the adult programs at the library in 2004. Programs\, then as now\, included authors and poets\, of course\, and also artists\, musicians\, historians\, actors\, environmentalists\, naturalists\, architects\, gardeners\, health counselors\, book clubs\, writing classes\, and travelers and experts from all over. Ken also hosted a long-running Coffeehouse series at the library and an ongoing Songwriters series. \n\n\n\nIn addition to filling the Library’s calendar with community events\, Ken had many other roles at the library. As Assistant Library Director and Director of the Walsh History Center\, Ken oversaw renovations on the Library’s second floor\, and painting\, roofing\, HVAC\, and ongoing repair projects over the years. He promoted Camden’s annual Winterfest celebration over the past two decades. The Camden Herald was digitized and posted online under his guidance. The Library’s Summer Concert Series and Summer Movie series through the years were part of Ken’s responsibilities\, as well as hosting and support of many town organizations over the years such as the Camden Conference\, Camden Garden Club\, Camden Philosophical Society\, the Camden-Rockport Historical Society\, Union of Maine Visual Artists\, Senior College\, and the Library’s own Harbor Arts festival and regular book sales \n\n\n\n“I won’t be going far!” said Ken. “I have several projects that I want to see through in the History Center that I intend to keep working on as a volunteer. The Camden library is the best place to be!”

They will discuss forest carbon basics\, forest resilience\, forest carbon practices\, and provide information on where to find additional resources\, and who to contact for professional guidance. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual program on Zoom. Register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ndTfK4A3Q1y4rdy_uAneAQ \n\n\n\nAndy Whitman is the Climate and Carbon Specialist at the Maine Forest Service.  This is a new role where Andy is working with MFS district foresters to provide science-based information to woodland owners about managing their woodlands for resilience to climate impacts and improving forest carbon storage while managing for their other woodland objectives.  He has an M.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maine at Orono.  He has spent most of his life living and working in Maine including 25 years on forestry and forest ecology.  His lifetime focus has been on the sustainable management of forests and farmland for the benefit of humans and nature. \n\n\n\nAllyssa Gregory is the Maine Forest Service’s District Forester for the MidCoast and Acting Land Owner Outreach Forester. She assists with regulatory issues related to NRPA and FPA\, leads educational workshops\, and offers in-person visits to landowners with 10+ forested acres. She obtained a forestry degree from Southern Illinois University\, Carbondale. Her professional background includes rural forestry\, urban forestry\, horticulture\, and structure firefighting. Allyssa is involved with the Tree Farm program as a certified inspector and serves as the chair for Knox & Waldo counties. She is a Project Learning Tree facilitator and can assist educators with natural resource based programs.

Perennial species (plants that live for more than one year) may come back year after year. It is important to leave pots outside in a semi-sheltered area so that the plants go through natural cold cycles. Clay\, ceramic\, and terracotta pots may crack in low temperatures. If you live in an area with cold winters\, consider using plastic pots. At the end of the season\, if you don’t want to keep your potted plant\, either plant it in the ground or give it to a friend. You will be contacted if a spot opens up! \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome back poets Mary Brancaccio and Ellen Goldsmith for another poetry writing workshop on Friday\, February 16\, 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. Breaking the Silence: Writing Toward Healing and Resilience is grounded in the idea of writing as a tool to process grief\, illness and loss. Through poems and writing prompts\, we will explore the concepts of absence and presence\, hiding and revealing\, speech and silence. The goal is to help participants develop ideas\, begin drafts of poems\, and learn how to address common obstacles to writing about personal experiences. Useful strategies and poetic craft moves will be presented. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Brancaccio is the author of Fierce Geometry\, published by Get Fresh Books Publishing. Her poetry has appeared in Naugatuck River Review\, Minerva Rising\, and Edison Literary Review\, Adana Literary Journal\, among others. She has an MFA in Poetry and is a Pushcart Prize nominee. Brancaccio’s poetry is also included in Writing the Land: Maine and Writing the Land: Northeast\, as well as two international anthologies of poetry. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Pyrocene: Ecological Implications for a Planet on Fire \n\n\n\nThe Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, February 15 at 6:00 PM on Zoom with David Govatski\, former fire management office for the US Forest Service.  \n\n\n\n“Pyrocene” is a term used to describe the human use of fire and how it impacts our planet. The term was first coined in 2015 by Stephen Pyne of Arizona State University. Fire can be a friend or foe. This program will describe how humans first harnessed fire and eventually switched to burning fossil fuels. We will then discuss forest fire ecology\, zombie forests\, prescribed fire\, fire weather\, and related topics to better understand the ecological implications of a planet that seems to be on fire. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual program on Zoom. He retired after working for the US Forest Service for over 30 years. He served as a fire management officer on a national interagency incident management team for eight years. David’s first job in the Forest Service was as a fire lookout on the Devil’s Head Lookout on the Pike National Forest in Colorado. He worked on the Redmond Hotshot firefighting crew on the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon and worked on numerous large forest fires\, including the 1988 Yellowstone Fires. He also worked on multiple prescribed fires in his career. David has maintained a strong personal interest in the study of fire ecology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMID-COAST AUDUBON\, SERVING THE MAINE COUNTIES OF KNOX\, LINCOLN\, AND WALDO\n\n\n\nMid-Coast Audubon is a chapter of Audubon\, and affiliated with Maine Audubon. We cover the midcoast inland from Boothbay Harbor\, west to Windsor and China\, and east along the coast to Bucksport. Our mission is to promote long-term\, responsible use of natural resources through informed membership\, education and community awareness. \n\n\n\nThroughout the year fascinating and informative programs are presented (free!) via the Camden Public Library\, and there are numerous field trips to see birds and learn about the natural history of Maine. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Kate McMahon\, Global Slavery Historian at the National Museum of African American History & Culture for her talk\, “Freedom’s Woods: Peterborough and African Americans in Midcoast Maine\, 1776-1865” on Sunday\, February 11\, at 2:00 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. This event is part of the 2024 Speaker Series co-sponsored by the Camden-Rockport Historical Society and is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nThe historic African American community of Peterborough was founded by Amos and Sarah Peters in Warren\, Maine. Amos and Sarah built a community based upon kinship and freedom-making in the woods of rural Maine that existed until the early 20th century. This talk will explore the history of Peterborough\, and the broader history of African Americans in Maine during the 18th and 19th centuries. \n\n\n\nAmanda Shelmerdine\, the town of Warren’s sexton\, will also be present. She currently leads research on an exhibition that will open at the NMAAHC in December 2024\, titled In Slavery’s Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World. She received her B.A. in Art History and M.A. in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine. She completed her Ph.D. in History at Howard University in 2017. Her dissertation was entitled The Transnational Dimensions of Africans and African Americans in Northern New England\, 1776-1865. Her current research explores New England’s connections to and complicity in the illegal slave trade and colonialism\, 1809-1900. She is committed to exploring the living legacies of slavery and the slave trade in the present day and interpreting this history for a broad public through frequent public speaking engagements and scholarly production. At Mermaid Bindery she binds books and boxes for others. As well as writing\, paper decorating\, collage\, calligraphy\, pop-up & paper sculpting to illustrate her own artist books. Building on these creative techniques\, she designs workshops for many different communities of makers.

She is the designer of the Farnsworth Museum Gardens. Barber knows about the intimate relationship between people and plants—sun to soil\, seed to root\, plant to harvest\, harvest to human\, human to human. It’s that connection that drew her to the practice of horticultural therapy (HT)\, defined by Barber as\, “the transformation that happens when we work with the earth to improve well-being. She adds\, “plants\, like people\, are resilient; they can heal\, they can recover\, rehabilitate\, rejuvenate\, and prefer to live in communities. They bounce back. When we think about designing a garden\, we so often think about nurturing the plant\, it’s also about how that plant is nurturing us.”
