DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, October 16 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room with a presentation from biologist Geri Vistein about coyotes. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Dave Conlin\n\n\n\nGeri Vistein will take us on a journey to discover who this important and resilient carnivore is\, in a way you have never heard before. This presentation is all about us as well\, since we share the landscape and our lives with Coyote. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVistein will touch upon Anthropology\, Archaeology\, Prehistoric and Modern History\, Native American life\, poetry\, Human Psychology\, Human Belief Systems\, European World Views\, Wildlife Science and Ecology\, Animal Husbandry\, and much more. \n\n\n\nThis presentation gives our community members a chance to come together and share your own stories\, ask questions you have been wanting to ask\, and share a dialogue that helps us all to understand better our very deep rooted relationships with all life\, including our fellow humans. Come hear the Song Dogs Sing! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeri Vistein is a Conservation Biologist whose focus is carnivores and their vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of our planet. She educates on carnivore ecology\, complex cultures and history\, and how humans can coexist with coyotes. Working mostly in Maine\, Geri also focuses on outreach to farmers to improve relationships between coyotes and agricultural systems. DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: David Hume & Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:At its next gathering\, on Tuesday\, Oct. 21\, the Camden Philosophical Society will discuss ideas put forward by 18th Century empirical philosopher David Hume — and ways in which those ideas remain relevant to today’s world of intense dispute over what constitutes truth. We’ll also consider how Hume’s thinking may relate to artificial intelligence (AI)\, a topic of discussion by the Society earlier this year. \n\n\n\nThe October 21 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email saramiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the day of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBest known in his lifetime for his History of England\, Hume is now associated with philosophical skepticism\, empiricism and\, as stated clearly only in writings published after his death\, atheism. He maintained that all “matters of fact” come to be known by humans through their “experience” of the physical world. Only pure mathematics and other conceptual forms of knowledge based exclusively on “relations of ideas” can be known “a priori” by humans\, through reasoning alone. \n\n\n\nSkeptical of any human capacity to know cause and effect with certainty\, Hume argued instead that beliefs and less firm convictions about the way the world works are based on assessments of probability. Hume saw this empirical nature of human learning as directly comparable to the way in which non-human animals learn about and function in the world. \n\n\n\nHume’s empirical approach to human acquisition of knowledge\, as opposed to the “pure reason” espoused by Emanuel Kant and others around that time\, is seen by some thinkers today as providing parallels with AI\, which learns from absorbing large bodies of often contradictory data. Contemporary philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett\, who spent his latter years in Down East Maine\, has been compared to Hume in this regard\, Dennett having been an avowed admirer of Hume’s thought. \n\n\n\nOur readings for the Oct. 21 discussion start with selected portions of Hume’s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding\, now his best-known mature work. Tea\, coffee\, and cookies will be served. \n\n\n\nThe Asheville-based songwriter’s carefully crafted melodies and poetry are imaginative and thought provoking as he explores themes of nature\, love\, memory\, and the passing of time. At the heart of his creative practice\, he investigates the intimate relationships between sound and our emotional experience.  \n\n\n\nWith his intricate\, ambient fingerpicking guitar style and suede-soft baritone voice\, de Vitry mesmerizes audiences into meditative serenity. Immersed in rich and nuanced harmonic composition\, listeners are gently drawn into the here and now. Effortlessly moving between unity and dissonance\, voice and instrumentation\, rhythm and melody\, de Vitry seamlessly integrates the comfort of folk music with the spine-shivering emotional release and intentionality of classical compositions. In so doing\, he manages to create a sound as dynamic and honest as the ocean’s eternally flowing tides or the planet’s ever-changing seasons.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLyle de Vitry is an acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, welcomes author Afarin Bellisario for a discussion on Iran’s past and present\, through the lens of her novel Silenced Whispers. \n\n\n\nThis event will take place on Thursday\, October 23 at 6:30 PM in person at the Camden Public Library\, in anticipation of the 39th Annual Camden Conference\, “Today’s Middle East: Power\, Politics\, & Players.” Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nSilenced Whispers transports readers to the enchanting world of Iran at the turn of the 20th century as the country transforms into a modern nation. It celebrates the courage of a young woman to resist oppression and colonial aggression\, and provides insight into how that time seeded conflicts in modern Iran and the Middle East. The book is the winner of Independent Publishers of New England’s silver medal for genre fiction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Afarin Bellisario\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfarin Bellisario has led a distinguished career in technology and business\, with leadership roles at major firms and MIT\, and continues to advise startups and teach internationally on innovation and commercialization. \n\n\n\nAs a writer\, she describes herself as “a bridge between East and West\, past and future.” Drawing on her experiences living through the Iranian Revolution and her career in American innovation\, she writes about the tensions and transformations that occur when tradition meets modernity. \n\n\n\n“I grew up in a family with its feet in the past and its head in the future. My grandmothers were taught rudimentary reading and writing at home\, but my father and uncles were university graduates and part of Iran’s emerging technocratic elite. I’ve come a very long way even from that: whereas one of my great grandfathers had 25 wives and concubines\, I have a PhD from MIT. \n\n\n\nToday\, with the benefit of hindsight\, I trace the roots of the Iranian conflict to the early twentieth century\, when Iran was introduced to modern technologies such as the telephone and electricity\, along with Western ideas of individuality. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the exhibit’s closing reception on Saturday\, October 25\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM. in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the month of October Camden Public Library is hosting a historical photo exhibit in the Picker Room\, Knox County Camera Club Revisited: Historical Photos by John Felton\, curated by John Felton’s granddaughter Mary Kay Felton. \n\n\n\nThe Knox County Camera Club was active from the 1930s to 1978. They hosted annual photo exhibitions at the Farnsworth and members participated in juried shows throughout Maine and Massachusetts. Local photographer John Felton was a 40+ year member. In the tradition of area photographers of the time\, like Carroll Thayer Berry and Kosti Ruohomaa\, Felton’s images captured local people\, day to day life\, and scenery in and around Camden\, Rockport\, and midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nJohn W. E. Felton\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, the Felton family loaned the negatives of the Felton Photo Collection to the Walsh History Center. The Walsh Center digitized close to a hundred of his 40+ year collection to date. John Felton’s granddaughter\, Mary Kay Felton\, organized the exhibition as an opportunity for people to see Camera Club exhibition photos not seen in the last 50-80+ years and to make the public aware of the Felton Collection in Camden Public Library’s Walsh History Center. John Felton would be proud to know that his great granddaughter\, affectionately known as “Miss Amy” Hand\, is CPL’s beloved childrens’ librarian.  \n\n\n\nMary Kay Felton hopes residents with a long history in Camden or Rockport can help identify people featured in the collection of seventeen 16 x 20 black and white photos. An additional seven photos capture images of Camera Club members in Berry’s studio\, at shows\, and on outings. Many of the members have been identified\, but Felton hopes exhibit goers can identify the remaining Camera Club members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n If you’re able to identify the subject of any photo\, Felton encourages you to write the photo number\, the name of the person you can identify\, and your name and contact information on a slip of paper and drop it in the container provided in the Picker room this October.  \n\n\n\nFor more information about the exhibit\, contact Mary Kay Felton at feltonmk@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter Resilient Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Fall 2025 Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group will meet on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Dates are 9/23\, 10/7 (bonus session)\, 10/28\, 11/11\, 11/25\, 12/9\, 12/23\, 1/13/26\, 1/27/26. May include a zoom component if desired. If you have questions or would like to preregister\, email camdencan2025@gmail.com.  \n\n\n\nThe ultimate goal of these book discussions is to inform as well as expand one another’s understandings of the moment we are living in. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. Come join us—let’s see what we can do to thrive in these challenging times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur first book will be Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet by Kate Marvel. Marvel is a climate scientist who conveys her deep understanding of the climate systems with elegance\, humility\, and humor. Her chapters include Wonder\, Anger\, Guilt\, Fear\, Grief\, Pride\, and Hope. Marvel is our guide and our coach. She writes\, “It will not be easy. A happy ending is not guaranteed. But a better one is possible…No one is coming to save us. We have to create the we have to create the world in which we want to live. …Science sets the limits; we write the story. It can be a hopeful one.” We expect this book to carry us for five\, 1-hour sessions. There will be weekly readings and prepared discussion questions\, yet also room for the group to vary the pace and topics depending on personal interests.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series will be Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. As the author states\, “Life After Doom is for everyone who has reached a point where not facing their unpeaceful\, uneasy\, unwanted feelings about the future has become more draining than facing them. It’s for anyone who understands that we’ve entered a dangerous time and we need to prepare ourselves to face that danger with wisdom\, courage\, character\, and compassion.”

Photo Credit:Brandywine River Museum\n\n\n\nDuring this year’s Discover History Month\, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Mary Miller for a presentation on the artistic history of the revolutionary war\, on Tuesday\, October 28\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nCharles Willson Peale\, John Singleton Copley\, John Trumbull\, Benjamin West\, and Gilbert Stuart not only were intimately associated with the key players of the Revolution\, but they also captured their portraits and activities on canvas. These artists\, who interacted with the Founders\, contributed to the founding spirit of the country. Through their art\, they color and command our point of view. Whether truth or propaganda\, we will explore their intentions and look closely at some of the forgotten stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Miller’s lifelong enchantment with art history began at the Huntington Library with Thomas Gainsborough. From there\, she pursued the usual degrees from California State Colleges before beginning a teaching life that would take her around the world with her husband. She has been a teacher and presenter of the Arts and Humanities in London\, Vienna\, Lugano\, Charlotte\, and a longtime docent at the National Palace in Taiwan. With her life partner\, she has led art and history trips in Europe and Asia for too many years to mention. She makes her home with pleasure and endless gratitude in Camden\, Maine\, where she writes\, reads\, and gardens.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library.
