SUMMARY:CRHS: "Settling Into Maine: an 18th- Century Cook's-Eye View of Food\, Gathering\, and Gardening" with Nancy Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:During this year’s Discover History Month\, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Nancy Jenkins for a presentation on the history of 18th-century cooking\, gathering\, and gardening on Tuesday\, October 7\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library! \n\n\n\n“Settling Into Maine: an 18th-century Cook’s-Eye View of Food\, Gathering and Gardening.” \n\n\n\nMaine housewife\, midwife\, and copious diarist\, Martha Ballard lived on the Kennebec River in what’s now Hallowell from 1779 to 1812. Her diaries\, long buried in the vaults of the Maine State Library\, were unearthed by Laurel Ulrich\, a historian; they provide a rich account of women’s lives on the Maine frontier from the Revolution to the War of 1812\, neither of which plays any role in the diaries. Looking into Martha’s daily entries\, Nancy Harmon Jenkins explores a favorite topic: What did people eat and why–how did they cook\, what did they grow\, what did they share\, how did they survive the harsh winters in a frontier settlement? And most importantly\, what can we learn from them to apply to our lives today? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamden native Nancy Harmon Jenkins has spent a long career writing mostly about food and traveling the world to see what folks eat and why. She is the author of a dozen books (also mostly about food) and innumerable articles for publications from Saveur to the New York Times\, where she was a staff reporter for many years. \n\n\n\nShe learned to read at the Camden Public Library when she was four and has been a patron of the library ever since.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Fathers and Sons" by Ivan Turgenev
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor October 10\, Coté will read aloud from Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons. \n\n\n\nFathers and Sons is Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev’s masterpiece novel written in the mid-19th century. \n\n\n\nThe work delves into the generational conflicts between fathers and their sons\, particularly through the character Bazarov\, who embodies the emerging idea of Nihilism in Russian society. \n\n\n\nThe story primarily focuses on Arkady Kirsanov\, a newly graduated student\, and his father\, Nikolai Petrovitch Kirsanov\, highlighting the tensions and differing ideologies between them. At the start of the novel\, we are introduced to Nikolai Petrovitch as he waits for his son Arkady to return home from university\, filled with excitement and nostalgia for his late wife. \n\n\n\nWhen Arkady arrives home from college with his friend Bazarov\, the dynamic shifts as Bazarov’s radical ideas challenge the older generation’s values. The opening characters set the stage for exploring themes of change\, tradition\, and social criticism through the interactions between these characters\, establishing a rich context for the unfolding drama of generational differences and philosophical debates.  \n\n\n\nQuite controversial at the time of publication\, Fathers and Sons concerns the inevitable conflict between the values of traditionalists and intellectuals.  \n\n\n\nThe physician Bazarov\, the novel’s protagonist\, is the most powerful of Turgenev’s creations. He is a nihilist\, denying the validity of all laws save those of the natural science. Uncouth and forthright in his opinions\, he is nonetheless susceptible to love and by that fact doomed to unhappiness. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. This two-person show is a multi-media and multi-dimensional presentation in song\, storytelling and plenty of laughter.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis powerful show focuses on the intersection of popular music and American culture. It’s all about coming together\, joyously riding on the wings of some great songs.  Songs that will remind you what it was like to come of age in that colorful time that we all recognize as the Woodstock Generation.  So many ups and downs\,  excitement and heartbreak.  Spiritual quests and long hair everywhere. \n\n\n\nThe evening also features personal stories by Marc who’s high school band hit the top 40 while touring with the Doors\, Neil Diamond and Van Morrison… as well as a sparkling multi-media presentation by Susan Black.  All the songs will be performed by Marc on his treasured guitar of 50 years\, Claudette.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, October 16 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room with a presentation from biologist Geri Vistein about coyotes. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Dave Conlin\n\n\n\nGeri Vistein will take us on a journey to discover who this important and resilient carnivore is\, in a way you have never heard before. This presentation is all about us as well\, since we share the landscape and our lives with Coyote. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVistein will touch upon Anthropology\, Archaeology\, Prehistoric and Modern History\, Native American life\, poetry\, Human Psychology\, Human Belief Systems\, European World Views\, Wildlife Science and Ecology\, Animal Husbandry\, and much more. \n\n\n\nThis presentation gives our community members a chance to come together and share your own stories\, ask questions you have been wanting to ask\, and share a dialogue that helps us all to understand better our very deep rooted relationships with all life\, including our fellow humans. Come hear the Song Dogs Sing! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeri Vistein is a Conservation Biologist whose focus is carnivores and their vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of our planet. She educates on carnivore ecology\, complex cultures and history\, and how humans can coexist with coyotes. Working mostly in Maine\, Geri also focuses on outreach to farmers to improve relationships between coyotes and agricultural systems. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor October 17\, Coté will read aloud from Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. \n\n\n\nIn this vivid portrait of a single day in a woman’s life\, Mrs. Clarissa Dalloway is preoccupied with the last-minute details of preparation for a party while in her mind she is something much more than a perfect society hostess. \n\n\n\nAs she readies her house for friends and neighbors\, she is flooded with remembrances of the past – the passionate loves of her carefree youth\, her practical choice of husband\, and the approach and retreat of war. And\, met with the realities of the present\, Clarissa reexamines the choices that brought her there\, hesitantly looking ahead to the unfamiliar work of growing old. \n\n\n\nFrom the introspective Clarissa to the lover who never fully recovered from her rejection to a war-ravaged stranger in the park\, the characters and scope of Mrs. Dalloway reshape our sense of ordinary life and reshaped English literature as we know it. \n\n\n\n Mrs. Dalloway is commonly thought to be a response to James Joyce’s Ulysses. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: David Hume & Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:At its next gathering\, on Tuesday\, Oct. 21\, the Camden Philosophical Society will discuss ideas put forward by 18th Century empirical philosopher David Hume — and ways in which those ideas remain relevant to today’s world of intense dispute over what constitutes truth. We’ll also consider how Hume’s thinking may relate to artificial intelligence (AI)\, a topic of discussion by the Society earlier this year. \n\n\n\nThe October 21 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email saramiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the day of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBest known in his lifetime for his History of England\, Hume is now associated with philosophical skepticism\, empiricism and\, as stated clearly only in writings published after his death\, atheism. He maintained that all “matters of fact” come to be known by humans through their “experience” of the physical world. Only pure mathematics and other conceptual forms of knowledge based exclusively on “relations of ideas” can be known “a priori” by humans\, through reasoning alone. \n\n\n\nSkeptical of any human capacity to know cause and effect with certainty\, Hume argued instead that beliefs and less firm convictions about the way the world works are based on assessments of probability. Hume saw this empirical nature of human learning as directly comparable to the way in which non-human animals learn about and function in the world. \n\n\n\nHume’s empirical approach to human acquisition of knowledge\, as opposed to the “pure reason” espoused by Emanuel Kant and others around that time\, is seen by some thinkers today as providing parallels with AI\, which learns from absorbing large bodies of often contradictory data. Contemporary philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett\, who spent his latter years in Down East Maine\, has been compared to Hume in this regard\, Dennett having been an avowed admirer of Hume’s thought. \n\n\n\nOur readings for the Oct. 21 discussion start with selected portions of Hume’s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding\, now his best-known mature work. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library’s Coffeehouse Concert series continues with a free performance from Lyle de Vitry on October 21\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. Tea\, coffee\, and cookies will be served. \n\n\n\nThe Asheville-based songwriter’s carefully crafted melodies and poetry are imaginative and thought provoking as he explores themes of nature\, love\, memory\, and the passing of time. At the heart of his creative practice\, he investigates the intimate relationships between sound and our emotional experience.  \n\n\n\nWith his intricate\, ambient fingerpicking guitar style and suede-soft baritone voice\, de Vitry mesmerizes audiences into meditative serenity. Immersed in rich and nuanced harmonic composition\, listeners are gently drawn into the here and now. Effortlessly moving between unity and dissonance\, voice and instrumentation\, rhythm and melody\, de Vitry seamlessly integrates the comfort of folk music with the spine-shivering emotional release and intentionality of classical compositions. In so doing\, he manages to create a sound as dynamic and honest as the ocean’s eternally flowing tides or the planet’s ever-changing seasons.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLyle de Vitry is an acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. In 2023\, he was selected as one of ten finalists in the internationally recognized Telluride Troubadours contest and was named runner-up in the NewSong LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition. \n\n\n\nHe recently completed the prestigious Residency at 821 hosted by Lamplight AVL in Asheville\, NC\, and is currently developing an instrumental album\, set to be recorded in the summer of 2024. His debut album\, Door Within a Dream\, is set to be released in August 2024.
