New members are always welcome! \n\n\n\nClick here for the full book list for each month in 2025. \n\n\n\nSummary of Lemon Tree: an Arab\, a Jew\, and the Heart of the Middle East by Tolan Sandy: In 1967\, Bashir Al-Khayri\, a Palestinian twenty-five-year-old\, journeyed to Israel\, with the goal of seeing the beloved old stone house\, with the lemon tree behind it\, that he and his family had fled nineteen years earlier. To his surprise\, when he found the house he was greeted by Dalia Ashkenazi Landau\, a nineteen-year-old Israeli college student\, whose family fled Europe for Israel following the Holocaust. On the stoop of their shared home\, Dalia and Bashir began a rare friendship\, forged in the aftermath of war and tested over the next thirty-five years in ways that neither could imagine on that summer day in 1967.

DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes photographer and creator Nick Watts for his exhibition The Wanderings of a Waterman\, featuring immersive underwater photography from around the world. The exhibit will be on display in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of September.*  \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to an exhibit reception to view the works and meet the artist on Saturday\, September 20\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\n\nMy name is Nick Watts\, and The Wanderings of a Waterman is my way of sharing a life shaped\, challenged\, and inspired by the sea. \n\n\n\nThe ocean carried me to Mid-Coast Maine\, and it’s the art\, the people\, the possibilities—and yes\, always the sea—that has kept me here. Wanderings is a collection from the last decade I spent tracing the edges of the world’s oceans. It was beneath the waves where I felt most alive\, where awe became my teacher\, and where I discovered that life can be deeply\, joyfully lived in rhythm with the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt began with what I thought would be a six-month trip to New Zealand\, my only intention to learn how to surf and explore. Instead\, it became a ten-year walk-a-bout where I discovered that life is meant to be slow and intentional. To truly live is to go\, try\, fail\, and to grow through the unknown. \n\n\n\nI never got on my connecting flight home from NZ—I stayed. Fiji pulled me in\, and from there\, the sea became both my path and my compass. Without enough for a plane ticket\, I found another way: six months\, six boats\, and seventeen islands later\, I had hitchsailed 3\,400 nautical miles to Australia through countries I didn’t know existed. I was stranded on islands and the raw edges of the world. I learned to rely on strangers\, to adapt\, to trust\, and to listen to the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat voyage\, and the years of adventures that followed\, gave me more than stories—it gave me a way of seeing. Sailing\, diving\, spearfishing\, foraging\, surfing: each taught me to embrace wonder\, creativity\, and resilience. The sea offered me not just a livelihood\, but a way of life. \n\n\n\nThis gallery is a glimpse of that journey. It is both a record of where I’ve been and an offering of inspiration for wherever you’re going. My hope is that it stirs something in you\, a reminder that adventure waits just beyond the edge of comfort—and that joy is found in the wanderings.  \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. SUMMARY:"You Know I Can't Hear You When The Water Is Running - Everything You Need to Know About Hearing Loss & Hearing Aids" with Audiologist Angela Loavenbruck
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Camden Public Library Picker Room on September 4\, at 6:30 PM for a presentation on hearing loss and hearing aids by audiologist Dr. Angela Loavenbruck! \n\n\n\nHearing loss is a widespread issue that affects people of all ages. While it can be caused by a variety of factors\, the most common is age-related hearing loss. In fact\, it is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting older adults. This talk will provide a comprehensive overview of hearing loss\, its causes\, the different types of hearing aids available to help manage it\, and the best way to get professional diagnostic testing to guide your choices. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt a time when audiologists were prohibited from dispensing hearing aids\, Dr. Loavenbruck coauthored the first textbook on Hearing Aid Dispensing for Audiologists in 1978. She was among early advocates of the AuD degree and was a principal developer of rigorous educational standards for academic programs. As the first chair of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education\, her dialogues spurred the separation of university program accreditation from simple certification. She served on the Board of the Audiology Foundation of America\, helping to raise millions of dollars to support the transition to the AuD. During her term as president of the American Academy of Audiology\, she focused on assuring that ethical standards for audiologists were unsurpassed in health care. \n\n\n\nAngela Loavenbruck is an illustrious leader in the field of audiology\, whose high standards\, innovations\, and commitment have crafted positive and lasting changes in hearing-care services. She is among the first audiologists in the nation to start her own independent practice\, generating new delivery models for comprehensive\, evidenced-based audiology services directly from audiologists.

SUMMARY:Concert: Hildaland in the Amphitheatre
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Camden Public Library Amphitheatre on September 9\, 5:30 PM to hear a live music performance by Hildaland! This event is FREE and suitable for all ages! Bring a camp chair or blanket for comfortable seating. \n\n\n\nOrkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds in Hildaland. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic\, the journey taken wends through Scottish\, oldtime\, and Swedish inspired music intertwined with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth\, and the two weave in and out seamlessly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise Bichan (left) is a USA-based Scottish musician and photographer who uses both mediums to tell stories old and new. Growing up in the culturally rich Orkney islands gave Louise a solid grounding in music: she started playing fiddle at the age of 7. Since then she has honed her craft at Glasgow’s renowned session scene while studying at the city’s Art School\, before winning a scholarship to Berklee College of Music\, Boston. Masterfully blending traditional and classical arrangements\, her work is thoughtful\, and complex\, curious and playful. She composes in response to her roots and the world around her; weaving through stories of connection\, to people\, nature\, the past and the possibility of the future. \n\n\n\nEthan Setiawan (right)\, originally from Goshen\, Indiana\, tried out numerous instruments before finding his way to the mandolin\, making a name for himself when he won both the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield\, Kansas\, and the Rockygrass Mandolin Championship in Lyons\, Colorado. Years later\, Setiawan has become a leading voice of the mandolin\, his path wending its way through traditional bluegrass\, to Bach partitas\, and free jazz. He performs regularly with his progressive bluegrass band Fine Ground\, and Scottish fusion duo Hildaland.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes Tim Queeney\, author of the newly released Rope: How a Bundle of Twisted Fibers Became the Backbone of Civilization\, for a book talk on September 11 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRope is a unique and compelling adventure through the history of rope and its impact on civilization\, in the vein of single subject bestsellers like Salt and Cod.  \n\n\n\nTim Queeney is a sailor who knows more about rope and its importance to humankind than most. Time traveling\, he describes the building of the pyramids\, the Roman Coliseum\, Hagia Sofia\, Notre Dame\, the Sultan Hasan Mosque\, the Brooklyn Bridge and countless other constructions that would not have been possible without rope. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to writing books\, Tim Queeney was the longtime editor of and columnist for Ocean Navigator\, a magazine for serious offshore sailors. At ON he taught celestial\, coastal and radar navigation as an instructor for the Ocean Navigator School of Seamanship\, both in hotel meeting rooms ashore and on tall ships at sea. \n\n\n\nTim loves to sail\, hike\, get lost in museums\, and spend timeless hours drawing and painting. He is a dad to three sons and a rescue dog.

DESCRIPTION:With summer almost gone\, the Camden Philosophical Society is taking an early autumnal detour at its Tuesday\, Sep. 16\, gathering to discuss a selection of readings from In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays by the evidently rarely idle 20th century British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell. His views were often outspoken\, impassioned\, and controversial\, but a century later\, many of them are still worth reading for their eloquence\, wit and provocation. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be.  \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe three essays we’ll be reading — chapters I (In Praise of Idleness)\, II (“Useless” Knowledge)\, and XI (Of Men and Insects) — provide a quick introduction to Russell’s humanistic social and political worldview. \n\n\n\nIn chapter I\, Russell takes on one of Western culture’s most sacred cows: work. In his view\, work is required in so far as it can provide the necessities of life for everyone. Beyond that it becomes an instrument of power and slavery. With that in mind\, Russell welcomed such things as technological advances that could reduce the amount of time needed to produce those necessities of life and increase the amount of leisure for everyone. Leisure\, for Russell\, is the mark of civilization. With it\, a person can create enjoyment or innovate as one sees fit.  \n\n\n\nIn the second chapter\, he meditates on one of the leisure pursuits: learning for the sake of learning\, exploring “useless” avenues and byways of human history\, culture\, or experience. For Russell\, this kind of learning is a good in itself that can bring joy and make life worth living. It can help one to develop a more humane approach to life. He does not disregard “useful” technical knowledge\, but he does argue that “useless” knowledge can help to develop perspective\, moderation\, judgement\, and purpose.  \n\n\n\nIn the final selected chapter (XI)\, Russell reflects on humanity’s hubris. Does our preoccupation with domination cloud our ability to understand the ramifications of that dominance? Do we take the time to consider the consequences? It’s a very short chapter\, but thought provoking all the same. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSome Bertrand Russell tidbits: \n\n\n\nIn addition to being recognized as a mathematician\, a logician\, a coauthor of Principia Mathematica with A. N. Whitehead\, a cofounder of Analytic Philosophy with G. E. Moore\, mentor to Ludwig Wittgenstein\, a Nobel Prize recipient (Literature 1950)\, a committed anti-war activist\, and the driving force behind the “Russell-Einstein Manifesto\,” written in an effort to ban the use of weapons of mass destruction\, Russell was a public intellectual involved in contemporary social issues of the day. He was imprisoned several times for his anti-war activities\, while ultimately receiving the Order of Merit from King George VI in 1949. He was an earl\, a politician\, a social commentator\, an atheist\, a socialist\, and a lecturer at Trinity College\, Cambridge; Harvard; London School of Economics\, Johns Hopkins; Bryn Mawr\, etc. His godfather was John Stuart Mill. He met with Lenin in the USSR and left the meeting underwhelmed. He attempted to mediate a de escalation between Khrushchev and Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The exhibit will be on display in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of September.*  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to an exhibit reception to view the works and meet the artist on Saturday\, September 20\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\n\nMy name is Nick Watts\, and The Wanderings of a Waterman is my way of sharing a life shaped\, challenged\, and inspired by the sea. \n\n\n\nThe ocean carried me to Mid-Coast Maine\, and it’s the art\, the people\, the possibilities—and yes\, always the sea—that has kept me here. Wanderings is a collection from the last decade I spent tracing the edges of the world’s oceans. It was beneath the waves where I felt most alive\, where awe became my teacher\, and where I discovered that life can be deeply\, joyfully lived in rhythm with the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt began with what I thought would be a six-month trip to New Zealand\, my only intention to learn how to surf and explore. Instead\, it became a ten-year walk-a-bout where I discovered that life is meant to be slow and intentional. To truly live is to go\, try\, fail\, and to grow through the unknown. \n\n\n\nI never got on my connecting flight home from NZ—I stayed. Fiji pulled me in\, and from there\, the sea became both my path and my compass. Without enough for a plane ticket\, I found another way: six months\, six boats\, and seventeen islands later\, I had hitchsailed 3\,400 nautical miles to Australia through countries I didn’t know existed. I was stranded on islands and the raw edges of the world. I learned to rely on strangers\, to adapt\, to trust\, and to listen to the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat voyage\, and the years of adventures that followed\, gave me more than stories—it gave me a way of seeing. Sailing\, diving\, spearfishing\, foraging\, surfing: each taught me to embrace wonder\, creativity\, and resilience. The sea offered me not just a livelihood\, but a way of life. \n\n\n\nThis gallery is a glimpse of that journey. It is both a record of where I’ve been and an offering of inspiration for wherever you’re going. My hope is that it stirs something in you\, a reminder that adventure waits just beyond the edge of comfort—and that joy is found in the wanderings.  \n\n\n\n*The Picker Room hosts meetings and library events and is not always open for viewing. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher\, and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, June 20 and continuing through September. \n\n\n\nWe link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\nA limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Fall 2025 Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group will meet on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Marvel is a climate scientist who conveys her deep understanding of the climate systems with elegance\, humility\, and humor. Her chapters include Wonder\, Anger\, Guilt\, Fear\, Grief\, Pride\, and Hope. Marvel is our guide and our coach. She writes\, “It will not be easy. A happy ending is not guaranteed. But a better one is possible…No one is coming to save us. We have to create the we have to create the world in which we want to live. …Science sets the limits; we write the story. It can be a hopeful one.” We expect this book to carry us for five\, 1-hour sessions. There will be weekly readings and prepared discussion questions\, yet also room for the group to vary the pace and topics depending on personal interests.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series will be Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. As the author states\, “Life After Doom is for everyone who has reached a point where not facing their unpeaceful\, uneasy\, unwanted feelings about the future has become more draining than facing them. It’s for anyone who understands that we’ve entered a dangerous time and we need to prepare ourselves to face that danger with wisdom\, courage\, character\, and compassion.”

DESCRIPTION:This program is put on in partnership between Camden Public Library and ACLU Maine\, and will take place on Tuesday\, September 23 at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room as part of our celebration of Constitution Week (September 17-23). This event is FREE and open to everyone. \n\n\n\nWhat do laws written in the 18th and 19th centuries mean here in the 21st? Join the ACLU of Maine legal director Carol Garvan for an informative talk on the origins and modern-day applications of some of the constitutional amendments that form the bedrock of our democracy. By investigating the text of key amendments and their application in legal cases before the courts today\, we will explore the Constitution as both a historical and a living document. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore joining the ACLU of Maine\, Carol Garvan worked at Johnson & Webbert\, LLP\, where she spent over a decade litigating civil rights and employment cases in Maine\, with a focus on systemic discrimination and wage theft. While in private practice\, Carol worked to create collaborations between her firm and nonprofit organizations. \n\n\n\nCarol earned her Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College and her Juris Doctor from UC Berkeley School of Law. Before law school\, Carol taught middle school reading in Oakland\, California. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarol lives with her husband\, children\, and terriers in Gardiner\, Maine\, where she enjoys gardening\, swimming\, ice skating with her kids\, hiking with their dogs\, and making miniature things.

DESCRIPTION:Expectant and nursing parents are encouraged to join a community nursing circle in the Children’s Room of the Camden Library every 4th Wednesday from 4:30p to 5:30pm. The group welcomes families of all stripes and nurslings of all ages. Come with your nursing-related questions\, concerns or curiosities\, or come simply to commune.  \n\n\n\nThe gathering will be facilitated by Lulu Churchill (CLC) with input about library resources from children’s librarian Amy Hand. Lulu Churchill completed her certification in Lactation Management through the Center for Breastfeeding at the Healthy Children Project. SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the Camden Public Library for a collaborative presentation about local trail connections on Thursday\, September 25\, at 6:00 (Six O’Clock!) p.m. \n\n\n\nThis program brings together representatives from local land stewardship organizations including: \n\n\n\n\nErik Brooks\, Trail Supervisor at Camden Hills State Park\n\n\n\nRyan Gates with Coastal Mountains Land Trust\n\n\n\nJeff Nathan with Camden Parks and Recreation\n\n\n\nLuke Thombs of Georges River Land Trust\n\n\n\nJasper Guyer-Stevens of Midcoast Trail Stewardship\n\n\n\nand Nikki Lazure of the Bureau of Parks and Lands\n\n\n\n\n\nThey will each showcase recent work they are doing to improve access to the outdoors\, share where they collaborate with fellow organizations to connect trails\, and discuss how Trail Bonds fit into the picture. There will be plenty of time for Q & A!
