SUMMARY:"Wasted Food in Maine: An Overview" with Susanne Lee
DESCRIPTION:Susanne Lee\, faculty fellow at UMaine’s Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions will tell us about Food Rescue Maine and lead a conversation about statewide efforts to reduce wasted food by engaging with businesses\, institutions\, and households. This takes place on Tuesday\, September 30\, 3:00 p.m. at Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nThis program is put on by Nativity Lutheran Church‘s Creation Care Team and part of their program series “Wasted Food: Challenges and Community Solutions.” This event is co-sponsored by Camden Public Library.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusanne Lee’s career as an entrepreneurial business executive saw her successfully creating\, launching and operating multi-million-dollar consumer products brands and businesses with Fortune 100 companies as well as lean start-ups. Her skills include strategic solutions\, P&L management\, brand marketing\, consumer insights\, business development\, product design and manufacturing\, licensing\, merchandising\, operations\, and strong team-building. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nComing to academia as the Executive-in-Residence at the Maine Business School (MBS)\, Susanne utilized her business management and marketing experience to bring the “real-world” into MBS courses and projects. Key accomplishments include innovative initiatives like the Maine Business School Speaker Series: “Thriving Under Thirty”\, the UMaine/MBS experiential learning\, “Corporate Classroom” held at Hannaford corporate offices\, and “live” case studies with Bangor Savings\, JC Penney\, and more. \n\n\n\nSusanne’s most popular MBS coursework focused on sustainable business and marketing highlighting companies such as Patagonia whose superior “triple bottom line” strategy benefits their “profits\, people and the planet”.  In 2019\, Susanne was awarded a Mitchell Center grant to fund a multidisciplinary student research project identifying sustainable\, “triple bottom line” zero-waste food system solutions for Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusanne joined the Mitchell Center as a Faculty Fellow in Fall 2021 as part of the Mitchell Center’s Materials Management team.  Within that transdisciplinary group\, Susanne leads a student/faculty team working directly with state\, business\, and community stakeholders as well as national and global food waste experts like ReFED and Harvard Food Law & Policy to develop solutions to end food waste in Maine.  Each year\, the students implement a number of stakeholder-driven pilots to help Maine communities and organizations to build a sustainable\, waste-free\, circular food system. Statewide progress is shared through the Maine Food Waste Solutions Summit held annually in April.

SUMMARY:"How to Research Your Old Camden House" with Dr. Jennifer Gromada — Camden-Rockport Historical Society Series
DESCRIPTION:During this year’s Discover History Month\, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Dr. Jennifer Gromada for a presentation on researching Camden homes\, on Tuesday\, September 30\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany people are curious about their home’s history and those who lived there in the past. If you are interested in creating a more comprehensive history of a home’s ownership\, which in Camden may extend back as far as the eighteenth century\, historical research can be a rewarding exercise. This presentation will guide you through a variety of steps and sources to help you discover more about the history of a specific property in Camden\, its owners\, and residents. During this presentation you will learn: \n\n\n\n\nA brief history of the political boundaries of Camden \n\n\n\nCamden-specific historical research resources\, including those in the Walsh History Center\n\n\n\nHow to use Geographic Information System (GIS) maps (Appendix A.4) \n\n\n\nA description of property transfers and how to use the Knox County Registry of Deeds \n\n\n\nUseful Internet sources\, such as Ancestry.com\, Findagrave.com\, and Newspapers.com\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jennifer Gromada moved to Camden with her husband John in 2016 as the last of their seven children were finishing college. After retiring from a professional career that included executive roles in the defense\, financial markets\, and technology industries\, she returned to school\, earning a Doctorate in Arts & Letters in 2019. Jennifer currently works as an independent scholar and writer.  She serves on Camden’s Historic Resources Committee and is a member of the Camden Public Library Board of Trustees. Her publication\, “House Research Guide: Discovering Your Camden Home’s History\,” was the result of research conducted on her own historic home’s history.

SUMMARY:On Exhibit: Knox County Camera Club Revisited — Historical Photos by John Felton
DESCRIPTION:During the month of October Camden Public Library is hosting a historical photo exhibit in the Picker Room\, Knox County Camera Club Revisited: Historical Photos by John Felton\, curated by John Felton’s granddaughter Mary Kay Felton. \n\n\n\nThe Knox County Camera Club was active from the 1930s to 1978. They hosted annual photo exhibitions at the Farnsworth and members participated in juried shows throughout Maine and Massachusetts. Local photographer John Felton was a 40+ year member. In the tradition of area photographers of the time\, like Carroll Thayer Berry and Kosti Ruohomaa\, Felton’s images captured local people\, day to day life\, and scenery in and around Camden\, Rockport\, and midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nJohn W. E. Felton\n\n\n\nThe public is invited to the exhibit’s closing reception on Saturday\, October 25\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM. in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, the Felton family loaned the negatives of the Felton Photo Collection to the Walsh History Center. The Walsh Center digitized close to a hundred of his 40+ year collection to date. John Felton’s granddaughter\, Mary Kay Felton\, organized the exhibition as an opportunity for people to see Camera Club exhibition photos not seen in the last 50-80+ years and to make the public aware of the Felton Collection in Camden Public Library’s Walsh History Center. John Felton would be proud to know that his great granddaughter\, affectionately known as “Miss Amy” Hand\, is CPL’s beloved childrens’ librarian.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Kay Felton hopes residents with a long history in Camden or Rockport can help identify people featured in the collection of seventeen 16 x 20 black and white photos. An additional seven photos capture images of Camera Club members in Berry’s studio\, at shows\, and on outings. Many of the members have been identified\, but Felton hopes exhibit goers can identify the remaining Camera Club members \n\n\n\n If you’re able to identify the subject of any photo\, Felton encourages you to write the photo number\, the name of the person you can identify\, and your name and contact information on a slip of paper and drop it in the container provided in the Picker room this October.  \n\n\n\nFor more information about the exhibit\, contact Mary Kay Felton at feltonmk@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor October 3\, Coté will read aloud from Barbara Kent Lawrence’s novel Both Sides of the Pond. \n\n\n\nIn January of 1939 when Barbara Greene\, a beautiful young British actress\, met Joe Kennedy\, Jr.\, son of the American Ambassador\, she could not have anticipated that their relationship would lead to her emigrating to the United States and learning the pilot a plane.  \n\n\n\nNeither could her brother Kent have foreseen his bitter retreat from Dunkirk when he left England in January 1940 to fight in France\, or his subsequent service on the front lines in Cornwall\, North Africa\, Sicily\, and Burma.  \n\n\n\nIn this intensively researched story of their war\, we also hear the stories of other ordinary people who survived extraordinary circumstances. \n\n\n\nClick the links to find the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThoughts to share? SUMMARY:Harbor Arts Fair Fall 2025
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 4\, and Sunday\, October 5\, the Fall Harbor Arts and Books Fair takes place in the beautiful Camden Amphitheatre and along Atlantic Avenue. The fair will feature over 50 talented artists and craftspeople showcasing and selling wares from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. This popular community event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nHarbor Arts and Books has possibly the most beautiful location for an art fair on the East Coast. The fairs take place in Camden’s historic Harbor Park and Amphitheatre\, and on the street that passes through the park\, at the head of Camden Harbor. Exhibitors display their work in standard 10×10 tents. This juried show is a dynamic focal point of creative expression. It is a perfect place for artists to show their wares\, connect with other creative folks\, and pair art enthusiasts with beautiful creations. \n\n\n\nThe Fair runs concurrently with the library’s Huge Book Sale\, which kicks off a day earlier on Friday\, October 3\, and runs through Sunday\, October 5. The tent will be located in the “Meadow” parking lot\, just past the Camden Amphitheatre on Atlantic Ave. The book sale hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nBoth of these events offer hours of family-friendly fun in charming and walkable downtown Camden. Delicious eateries\, historic schooners\, fabulous specialty shops\, and even hiking trails are all within easy reach of the fair\, making it a great day trip or weekend adventure.

DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Fall 2025 Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group will meet on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. Dates are 9/23\, 10/7 (bonus session)\, 10/28\, 11/11\, 11/25\, 12/9\, 12/23\, 1/13/26\, 1/27/26. May include a zoom component if desired. If you have questions or would like to preregister\, email camdencan2025@gmail.com.  \n\n\n\nThe ultimate goal of these book discussions is to inform as well as expand one another’s understandings of the moment we are living in. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. Come join us—let’s see what we can do to thrive in these challenging times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur first book will be Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel About Our Changing Planet by Kate Marvel. Marvel is a climate scientist who conveys her deep understanding of the climate systems with elegance\, humility\, and humor. Her chapters include Wonder\, Anger\, Guilt\, Fear\, Grief\, Pride\, and Hope. Marvel is our guide and our coach. She writes\, “It will not be easy. A happy ending is not guaranteed. But a better one is possible…No one is coming to save us. We have to create the we have to create the world in which we want to live. …Science sets the limits; we write the story. It can be a hopeful one.” We expect this book to carry us for five\, 1-hour sessions. There will be weekly readings and prepared discussion questions\, yet also room for the group to vary the pace and topics depending on personal interests.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second book in CamdenCAN’s Fall/Winter reading series will be Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian D. McLaren. Far from an apocalyptic nightmare\, this work\, written by a former English professor and pastor\, offers a life-affirming approach to living in difficult times. As the author states\, “Life After Doom is for everyone who has reached a point where not facing their unpeaceful\, uneasy\, unwanted feelings about the future has become more draining than facing them. It’s for anyone who understands that we’ve entered a dangerous time and we need to prepare ourselves to face that danger with wisdom\, courage\, character\, and compassion.”

SUMMARY:CRHS: "Settling Into Maine: an 18th- Century Cook's-Eye View of Food\, Gathering\, and Gardening" with Nancy Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:During this year’s Discover History Month\, Camden Public Library is teaming up with long-time partner Camden-Rockport Historical Society to bring a series of history presentations to the library. We will welcome Nancy Jenkins for a presentation on the history of 18th-century cooking\, gathering\, and gardening on Tuesday\, October 7\, 6:30 PM in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library! \n\n\n\n“Settling Into Maine: an 18th-century Cook’s-Eye View of Food\, Gathering and Gardening.” \n\n\n\nMaine housewife\, midwife\, and copious diarist\, Martha Ballard lived on the Kennebec River in what’s now Hallowell from 1779 to 1812. Her diaries\, long buried in the vaults of the Maine State Library\, were unearthed by Laurel Ulrich\, a historian; they provide a rich account of women’s lives on the Maine frontier from the Revolution to the War of 1812\, neither of which plays any role in the diaries. Looking into Martha’s daily entries\, Nancy Harmon Jenkins explores a favorite topic: What did people eat and why–how did they cook\, what did they grow\, what did they share\, how did they survive the harsh winters in a frontier settlement? And most importantly\, what can we learn from them to apply to our lives today? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamden native Nancy Harmon Jenkins has spent a long career writing mostly about food and traveling the world to see what folks eat and why. She is the author of a dozen books (also mostly about food) and innumerable articles for publications from Saveur to the New York Times\, where she was a staff reporter for many years. \n\n\n\nShe learned to read at the Camden Public Library when she was four and has been a patron of the library ever since.

SUMMARY:Explorations Read-Aloud: "Fathers and Sons" by Ivan Turgenev
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday\, at 11:00 am\, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page\, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian\, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. \n\n\n\nFor October 10\, Coté will read aloud from Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons. \n\n\n\nFathers and Sons is Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev’s masterpiece novel written in the mid-19th century. \n\n\n\nThe work delves into the generational conflicts between fathers and their sons\, particularly through the character Bazarov\, who embodies the emerging idea of Nihilism in Russian society. \n\n\n\nThe story primarily focuses on Arkady Kirsanov\, a newly graduated student\, and his father\, Nikolai Petrovitch Kirsanov\, highlighting the tensions and differing ideologies between them. At the start of the novel\, we are introduced to Nikolai Petrovitch as he waits for his son Arkady to return home from university\, filled with excitement and nostalgia for his late wife. \n\n\n\nWhen Arkady arrives home from college with his friend Bazarov\, the dynamic shifts as Bazarov’s radical ideas challenge the older generation’s values. The opening characters set the stage for exploring themes of change\, tradition\, and social criticism through the interactions between these characters\, establishing a rich context for the unfolding drama of generational differences and philosophical debates.  \n\n\n\nQuite controversial at the time of publication\, Fathers and Sons concerns the inevitable conflict between the values of traditionalists and intellectuals.  \n\n\n\nThe physician Bazarov\, the novel’s protagonist\, is the most powerful of Turgenev’s creations. He is a nihilist\, denying the validity of all laws save those of the natural science. Uncouth and forthright in his opinions\, he is nonetheless susceptible to love and by that fact doomed to unhappiness. DESCRIPTION:Sound bathing is back! Enjoy the relaxing and transformative sound of gongs\, chimes\, and more in the beautiful Amphitheatre. \n\n\n\nMusical instrument creator and Sound Therapists Jim Doble and Maleine Gargurevich will produce soothing sonic waves with gongs\, other instruments\, and vocals. \n\n\n\nBring something comfy to lay or sit on. DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library will be closed on Monday\, October 13 in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We will reopen with normal hours on Tuesday\, October 14. SUMMARY:Tai Chi and Qigong
DESCRIPTION:Please note: On Thursdays in Summer\, meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nEnjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library.
