This event is open to the public. \n\n\n\nABRAHAM LEON KROLL (1884–1974)Building the Ship\, 1916Oil on canvas\, 46 x 52 in.Signed and dated (at lower right): Leon Kroll 1916\n\n\n\nIn June 1916\, Leon Kroll was painting in the New York’s Catskill Mountains when he received a letter from his friend\, the Ashcan artist Robert Henri. Henri wrote that their mutual friend\, George Bellows\, was in Camden\, “lonely and in a rut.” “Why don’t you go and paint near George?\,” Henri urged. He’d like you to\, very much.” Kroll packed up his car\, drove to Maine\, and rented a house in Camden next door to the Bellows family. \n\n\n\nCamden proved productive for both artists. This was the eve of America’s entry into World War I\, and shipyards up and down the Maine coast were constructing wooden freight ships for use in moving materiel overseas. Inspired by the spectacle of a massive wooden ship under construction in Camden\, Kroll painted Building the Ship. Bellows admired the work. “That’s a beautiful motif. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. Wanderings is a collection from the last decade I spent tracing the edges of the world’s oceans. It was beneath the waves where I felt most alive\, where awe became my teacher\, and where I discovered that life can be deeply\, joyfully lived in rhythm with the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt began with what I thought would be a six-month trip to New Zealand\, my only intention to learn how to surf and explore. Instead\, it became a ten-year walk-a-bout where I discovered that life is meant to be slow and intentional. To truly live is to go\, try\, fail\, and to grow through the unknown. \n\n\n\nI never got on my connecting flight home from NZ—I stayed. Fiji pulled me in\, and from there\, the sea became both my path and my compass. Without enough for a plane ticket\, I found another way: six months\, six boats\, and seventeen islands later\, I had hitchsailed 3\,400 nautical miles to Australia through countries I didn’t know existed. I was stranded on islands and the raw edges of the world. I learned to rely on strangers\, to adapt\, to trust\, and to listen to the sea. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat voyage\, and the years of adventures that followed\, gave me more than stories—it gave me a way of seeing. Sailing\, diving\, spearfishing\, foraging\, surfing: each taught me to embrace wonder\, creativity\, and resilience. The sea offered me not just a livelihood\, but a way of life. \n\n\n\nThis gallery is a glimpse of that journey. As the first chair of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education\, her dialogues spurred the separation of university program accreditation from simple certification. She served on the Board of the Audiology Foundation of America\, helping to raise millions of dollars to support the transition to the AuD. Bring a camp chair or blanket for comfortable seating. \n\n\n\nOrkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds in Hildaland. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic\, the journey taken wends through Scottish\, oldtime\, and Swedish inspired music intertwined with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth\, and the two weave in and out seamlessly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise Bichan (left) is a USA-based Scottish musician and photographer who uses both mediums to tell stories old and new. Growing up in the culturally rich Orkney islands gave Louise a solid grounding in music: she started playing fiddle at the age of 7. Since then she has honed her craft at Glasgow’s renowned session scene while studying at the city’s Art School\, before winning a scholarship to Berklee College of Music\, Boston. Masterfully blending traditional and classical arrangements\, her work is thoughtful\, and complex\, curious and playful. She composes in response to her roots and the world around her; weaving through stories of connection\, to people\, nature\, the past and the possibility of the future. \n\n\n\nEthan Setiawan (right)\, originally from Goshen\, Indiana\, tried out numerous instruments before finding his way to the mandolin\, making a name for himself when he won both the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield\, Kansas\, and the Rockygrass Mandolin Championship in Lyons\, Colorado. Years later\, Setiawan has become a leading voice of the mandolin\, his path wending its way through traditional bluegrass\, to Bach partitas\, and free jazz. On Thursdays in the summer\, we meet on the Upper Lawn. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library.
