Courtesy of Peter Roberts.\n\n\n\nJoin us for the first program of Discovery History Month on Tuesday\, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room featuring Maine State Archivist Kate McBrien. \n\n\n\nIn 1912\, the State of Maine evicted a community of African American and white residents from their homes on Malaga Island. Racism\, economic struggles\, and eugenics all led to the devastation of this community.  \n\n\n\nThe program will explore the history behind this story that was hidden for so many years.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nKate McBrien serves as the Maine State Archivist\, overseeing the archival preservation and management of state records at the Maine State Archives in Augusta. Before this role\, Kate worked at the Maine Historical Society and Maine State Museum in their curatorial and public engagement departments. At the State Museum\, she researched and curated the award-winning exhibit “Malaga Island\, Fragmented Lives” about the Malaga Island community.”  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThis program is a part of the Camden Public Library’s “Discover History Month” series of history-themed programs\, events\, and exhibits. CLICK HERE for more special Discover History Month programs! DESCRIPTION:Now there’s yoga at the library all year long! Denyse Robinson leads an all-levels yoga flow class on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Picker Room. Bring your own mat if you have one\, although Denyse will have a few extras as well as blocks and straps. \n\n\n\nWe begin each class with breathwork\, meditation\, and setting the intention to connect with our higher selves\, the Earth and one another. \n\n\n\nWe typically commence the flow with some sun salutations\, and then move to standing poses\, balance poses\, and then seated poses into final relaxation. This Flow class is linked with the breath so that each movement corresponds with an inhale and an exhale and is a new and varied sequence of yoga poses each class.

DESCRIPTION:Do robots with high-level Artificial Intelligence have “moral standing\,” and what does it mean in terms of rights and responsibilities if they do? These are questions the Camden Philosophical Society will explore at its Tuesday\, Sep. 17 session – the second in its series of deep dives into ethical and philosophical issues raised by the development of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). \n\n\n\nThe Society’s Sep. 17 meeting will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nReadings\n\n\n\nThe gathering will start with viewing of a portion of an episode from the television series Star Trek: Next Generation\, in which Captain Jean-Luc Picard argues before a tribunal that the robot known as Data has moral standing and should not be dismantled\, as a scientist is proposing to do. The author shares herjourney\, emphasizing spontaneous decision-making and the creation of dynamic learning environments. \n\n\n\nHighlighting the Magic Formula for class satisfaction and the role of games in solving problems\, this guide inspires educators\, parents\, and learners to embrace an educational approach that fosters creativity and individual expression. It presents practical advice on designing curriculums that respond to students’ queries and passions\, making every learning experience enriching and tailored. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLaurie Block Spigel homeschooled her two sons in New York City\, where she created the website HomeschoolNYC.com and taught popular classes to homeschoolers. Laurie has lectured at alternative education conferences\, written articles and published the HomeschoolNYC newsletter. Her book\, Education Uncensored: A Guide for the Aspiring\, the Foolhardy and the Disillusioned (2006)\, part memoir and part homeschooling guide\, explains what’s wrong with America’s educational system. Laurie lives with her husband and cat in Maine not far from her younger son and daughter-in-law\, where she writes\, teaches\, and advocates for homeschooling and game-based\, personalized education.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Camden Herald’s editorial staff in a trip through nearly two centuries of newspaper history on Tuesday\, September 10\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the evolution of the Camden Herald (est. 1869) over the decades and review notable issues and stories over the years. The program will conclude with a participatory discussion about how news and information are distributed today and our hopes for the future of news in the 21st century.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Dunkle started working as a journalist in the Midcoast in 1998 as a cub reporter at The Courier-Gazette. He serves as executive editor of The Courier-Gazette\, Camden Herald\, The Republican Journal and The Free Press\, covering Knox County with a focus on Camden and Rockland. In addition to news stories\, he has written humor columns\, movie reviews\, short stories and novels. \n\n\n\nDrew Himmelstein is the community engagement and solutions journalism editor for the Camden Herald\, where she dreams up innovative ways to encourage civic dialogue and reports on how we can improve some of the most pressing problems in our community.

Smith will present a selection of works on paper in various media to include watercolor\, pastel\, and gouache. \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to the exhibit’s opening reception to view the works and meet the artist on Saturday\, September 7\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nDouglas Smith attended the Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver\, CO\, and the Lyme Academy of Fine Art\, Old Lyme\, CT\, where he studied portrait painting and received the first Stobart Foundation Scholarship for outdoor painting. Smith moved to Maine in 2004. He has travelled and painted on location in Europe\, Mexico\, Russia\, and Alaska. DESCRIPTION:Amy Thomas\, Restoration Ecologist\, Wild Ones Midcoast Maine Program Chair\, MSW\, MNRD\, will present  “Ecological Principles to Create Aesthetically Beautiful Wildlife Habitat Using Native Plants – No Matter Your Garden Size” in the Picker Room on Thursday\, September 5\, at 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll begin with a brief overview of the ecological and environmental benefits and importance of using native plants in landscapes and gardens. This presentation is geared to any size yard or property\, urban or rural.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore the differences between “cultivars\,” “nativars” and “true native” plants\, and each of their possible potential impacts on pollinators and wildlife.   \n\n\n\n\n\nNext we’ll identify some basic alternative native species which make transitioning portions of your garden to natives easy. The native species in this section have been selected for their visual characteristics\, bloom time\, and foliage shapes often seen in locally used cultivars\, but possess pollinator and wildlife enhancing qualities cultivars lack. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss local nursery sources for safely grown\, genetically diverse native plants\, and have some time for Q&A.

SUMMARY:"Water is My Inspiration" Photography & Artist Book Exploration with Sue Michlovitz
DESCRIPTION:Sue Michlovitz will discuss the genesis of and reasoning behind her photographs made in the natural world. Both water and trees are characters in her work and act as her inspirations. Demonstrations of her images will be through projection and sample prints. Attendees can expect some interactive parts during the evening. She also will talk about and show her 2023 fine artist book Breathe in Water. \n\n\n\nThis book is held in the Hirsch Library of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and in the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections (Deluxe Edition). A review of Breathe in Water by Tim Anderson of Shadow & Light Magazine stated: “This is not simply a book\, it is a singular piece of art” \n\n\n\nSue will end the evening presentation with a book signing. 10% of sales will be donated to the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSue Michlovitz is a Camden based visual artist\, engaged in photography\, artist books and mixed media. She is inspired by sights that may go unseen and subjects found in nature that have both components of realism and abstraction. \n\n\n\nShe has shown her art through the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Photoville (Winchester\, MA)\, Blue Raven Gallery (Rockland\, ME)\,  The Parsonage Gallery (Searsport\, ME)\,  Michael Good Gallery\, Rockport Public Library\, and Zoot Coffee.  Her work has also been been in exhibitions in Portland\, ME at the Maine Jewish Museum\, Maine Museum of Photographic Arts and Cove Street Arts. \n\n\n\nShe immersed into the studies of photography and book arts following a 45+year career as a physical therapy clinician and professor. Michlovitz holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Hahnemann University (now Drexel)\, Philadelphia\, PA and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Maine Media College. Learn about the applications of ecopsychology from the personal to the community and come away feeling inspired! \n\n\n\n\nAmory Lee is a graduate student working on her Master of Arts in Ecopsychology and she is on a mission to spread the word about it. DESCRIPTION:Join Tom DiMenna and Eddie Holm for an enjoyable evening of “Story Songs of the 70s” featuring music from Gordon Lightfoot\, Harry Chapin\, Cat Stevens live in the Amphitheatre on Thursday\, August 22 at 5:30 PM! This concert is FREE. Rain location inside the library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStory Songs of the 70s\n\n\n\nTom DiMenna will be joined by bass player Eddie Holm and friends to resurrect some of the 70s greatest story songs from three of the era’s greatest singer/songwriters: Gordon Lightfoot\, Cat Stevens\, and Harry Chapin. This devoted review will feature Maine based singer/songwriter Tom DiMenna\, whose tribute shows have sold out opera houses up and down the Maine coast. \n\n\n\nDiMenna’s impressive vocal range and guitar style artfully channel all of these revered artists\, and will surely satisfy their most die hard fans. Tom will also be backed with accompaniment to provide plenty of toe tapping for this very special evening. This is your chance to see what all the buzz is about. You may even be moved to sing along\, or at least hum!  The legend lives on!  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“Go See Tom!” – Aimsel Ponti\, Portland Press Herald \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom DiMenna is a singer/songwriter based in Maine. He released his debut album\, “You Know Me\, My Devil Says” in 2020. His review of Cat Stevens gems sold out opera houses along the Maine coast in 2021\, and he’s now touring a wider review of story songs from the 1970s\, now including Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Chapin. \n\n\n\n\n“I’ve been playing since college\, where I was a lowly hand signaler on the football team. Then I played a year of semi-pro football for the Bologna Warriors in Italy. The experience of quarterbacking an Italian Football team was pretty funny. I spent the next decade working on a movie about it. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, I studied at Second City and various other improv schools in Chicago\, L.A.\, and New York. One of the sketches\, where I played the ghost of Telly Savalas doing a lounge act\, became an off-broadway show. The show ran for a few years before I relocated with my partner\, Lauren\, to focus on music in Maine.”  \n\n\n\n\nEddie Holm grew up in various countries around the world\, and currently hails from Camden\, Maine. His career has involved audio for feature films\, as well as sound engineering at the famed Waldo Theater in Waldoboro\, Maine. For the last 15 years\, he’s been playing bass and guitar in various bands in North Carolina and New England.

We link breath with movement\, and mindfulness as we move together through an ever changing sequence of seated\, standing\, balance\, forward folds\, backbends and mildly inverted poses. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe grand oaks above swaying in the breeze\, the open sky\, the foreground of sailboats at play- all the while your feet solid on the Earth\, makes for a truly transformational experience. \n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher and run throughout the summer until September 6.  A limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. Originally from Connecticut\, before becoming a western transplant\, Anna is a singular artist whose songs bear a placelessness that lends to their timeless nature.  \n\n\n\nAnna’s lyrical sensibility is steeped in wisdom\, and layered with evocative musicality and metaphysical embroidery while eschewing the mainstream & parting with platitudes. DESCRIPTION:Curious about AI (Artificial Intelligence)? Come join in a discussion with the Camden Philosophical Society on Tuesday\, Aug. 20.  Over the coming months\, the Society will be delving into ethical and philosophical issues raised by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The introductory August session will focus on the varying definitions applied to terms used in discussing AI\, and also on the practical and ethical concerns raised by the different modes of advanced AI and their likely future combination.   \n\n\n\nThe next meeting will take place on Tuesday\, August 20\, at 3:30 – 5:30 PM EDT. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for summer visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. This event will take place on Thursday\, August 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room.  \n\n\n\nAbout Brilliant Disguise\n\n\n\nAfter their nuclear family exploded into a vaporous mushroom cloud\, the two siblings could only\, as Bert the Turtle jingled in civil-defense cartoons\, duck and cover. The young Susan basked in her brother Robert’s glow. Teachers singled her out because\, certainly\, the little sister would excel too. But how could she ever reach their expectations? Instead\, she rebelled\, chose the wrong men\, drank and took drugs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan talked her way into a job at Rolling Stone magazine in 1976.
