This program will take place on Tuesday\, April 29\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. All are welcome! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe pinnace Virginia was the first English ocean-going ship built in the Americas.  It was built in 1607-1608 at the Popham Colony’s Fort St George located near the mouth of the Kennebec River. Virginia was built to aid in coastal exploration and fishing\, but was repurposed when the colony was abandoned in October 1608 and was used to return some of the colonists to England.  The building of Virginia was the beginning of Maine’s 400 year tradition of quality shipbuilding.  \n\n\n\nMaine’s First Ship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that strives to use their reconstruction of the 1607 pinnace Virginia to immerse the public in an exploration of the region’s early history\, craftsmanship\, and relationships\, and their impact on our community and environment today. She is a featured public speaker and has written numerous newspaper and magazine articles and has contributed to radio programs and podcasts as well as the movie\, The Buzz On Native Plants. \n\n\n\nDr. Roger Rittmaster is a retired endocrinologist and an avid nature photographer\, focusing on plants\, insects and underwater photography.  He moved to Maine fourteen years ago to pursue his hobbies (nature photography\, land conservation\, woodworking and tennis).  He loves to travel\, especially to exotic places where he can photograph uncommon species.  Shortly after moving to Maine\, he authored the book\, Butterflies Up Close: A Guide to Butterfly Photography.  Roger is a Maine Master Naturalist\, former Maine Entomological Society Vice-President\, former Chair of the Camden Conservation Commission and former Member of the Board of Coastal Mountains Land Trust.  \n\n\n\nLouisa Crane studied Environmental Studies at Wellesley College\, where she worked for Wellesley’s Paulson Ecology of Place Initiative for two years following graduation. She is now a Program Development Specialist at Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District\, where she helps local residents\, landowners\, farmers\, schools\, municipalities\, contractors\, land trusts and other land managers learn about and implement conservation practices. She enjoys sharing her excitement about native plants with others—as well as educating people about the problems caused by invasive plants. She grew up in Warren\, Maine and feels lucky to be doing this work in a place with which she feels so connected. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Thomas is a restoration ecologist with a master’s in ecological restoration and native rangeland management\, she’s worked on properties a few square feet to 25\,000 acres\, preserving and enhancing biodiversity for wildlife. She is the Co-Founder of Wild Ones Midcoast Maine\, technical advisor to the Camden Garden Club’s first native plant garden\, Founder of the Camden Native Plant Sale & Celebration\, and owner of Keystone Native Habitat & Landscape. DESCRIPTION:Join wildlife rehabilitator Pam Meier\, founder and director of The Turtle’s Back\, Inc.\, and get to know Maine’s incredible native turtle species—face-to-face! Learn how fascinating and different they all are\, why they are in decline\, how to identify different species and genders\, what to do (and not do) if you find a turtle\, what rehabbing these ancient reptiles is all about\, and how you can help. This program is suitable for all adults and children older than 8 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTurtles are one of the oldest yet most threatened groups of animals on earth. Three of Maine’s seven resident turtle species are on the state’s List of Endangered\, Threatened or Special Concern Species. (Rehabilitation of migratory species\, like sea turtles\, requires a Federal permit.) Habitat loss\, road mortality\, human collection and predation continue to take huge tolls. As a long-lived reptile that’s slow to mature and reproduce\, it takes a turtle many decades to simply replace itself. After 3 million years on earth\, their future is now uncertain. \n\n\n\nThe Turtle’s Back now takes in as many as 100 turtles each year and provides phone support for many more\, primarily between May and July when females travel up to a mile to nest\, crossing dangerous roads in the process. During peak season it is essentially a full-time ER! And although many animals can be released the same season\, some require a year or more to fully heal\, so the work continues year-round. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, TTB relies on donations to keep that work going. \n\n\n\nAs one of the few experienced rehabilitators specializing in turtles\, Pam shares her knowledge with other rehabbers\, offering training seminars and mentoring apprentices. She has also developed a foil tape shell repair technique which was published in the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Journal in 2021 and is now widely used. The goal is to provide clean water to five communities in the Sahel region of Senegal. \n\n\n\nDwight will share some of their experience with this project over the years during this presentation on Thursday\, June 12\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDwight’s philosophy\, borrowed from Scouts\, is “to leave the world a better place than we found it.” His Rotary journey began in 2002. He has served Rotary International in many capacities culminating as District Governor 2012-13 during which he led a U.S./Canada National Immunization Day in Pakistan. He participated in a Rotary school project in Leogane\, Haiti and a friendship exchange in Nepal.  Most recently\, he has been working in Senegal bringing water to the Bedik people in villages throughout the Kedougou region. \n\n\n\nDwight is retired from 20 years at Merrill Lynch and 25 years at Grey Global Group in NYC. Dubbed “the Internet’s New Favorite Philosopher by The New Yorker\, Han in this work provides a thought-provoking insight into the role of ritual throughout human history – and up to our internet age. \n\n\n\nThe June 17 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. He sees play is a vital aspect of our shared humanity. With it\, we engage\, we create\, we think\, we imagine\, we participate in our societies\, cultures and communities. Without it\, we become invisible nonentities lost within an endless stream of production\, data and calculations. \n\n\n\nContrary to the emancipatory rhetoric espoused by neoliberalism\, the shift from play to work and from performance to individual authenticity has created an environment empty of objective coherence\, shared values\, and collective meaning. Life\, no longer being a game to master\, becomes a life sentence of subservience\, notwithstanding all of the professed freedom\, individuality\, and progress embedded in the neoliberal project. \n\n\n\nFor this month’s discussion we’ll focus on the following chapters of The Disappearance of Rituals: \n\n\n\n1.
