DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Rockland photographer Jim Dugan for an exhibit in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of July\, featuring a mixture of his windjammer photos and his “Maine Kaleidoscopes.” \n\n\n\nFor those keeping track\, yes\, Jim Dugan did just have another show of his photography at another institution just down the road. But fear not! Jim has changed the show enough that even if you saw the other one\, you’ll find exciting new work in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\n“I mostly consider myself a straight photographer\,” Jim says\, “But I’ve embraced digital processes and all of my photos now go through some digital enhancements. That’s mostly intended to heighten the feeling I had when making the exposure. Sometimes\, though\, I’m looking to transform the image into something completely new.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n“After the Bake”\n\n\n\n“Popham Sand Kaleidoscope”\n\n\n\n“Departure”\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJim teaches photography aboard the schooner Mary Day (docked just down the hill from the Library) and has served as crew aboard her a few times. His Kaleidoscopes series is digital composites that transform a photo of a recognizable Maine place into something completely different.

SUMMARY:"Maine's Own" 195th Army Band Concert
DESCRIPTION:The 195th Maine Army Band will perform a free public concert in the Amphitheatre at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday\, June 30. Volunteers from the Camden and West Bay Rotary clubs are helping to promote and support the event. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and arrive before the concert begins \n\n\n\nThe 195th Army National Guard Band includes musicians from all over Maine. It offers a wide array of performing groups\, including a full concert band\, marching band\, jazz band\, brass band\, and pop band. The Band is directed by CW4 Brady Harris. \n\n\n\n“We are delighted to return once again to the Camden Amphitheatre\,” said Sergeant First Class Richard Romanelli. “We will have our full complement of musicians for the Camden performance\, and we have a great lineup of music to offer Camden.” \n\n\n\nAll band members participate in the group’s concert band\, performing a broad repertoire geared toward public audiences at military and civic functions. The band carries on the proud tradition of military bands past and present\, playing everything from military marches to significant wind band compositions and works by area composers. \n\n\n\nThe 195th Army Band promotes readiness by performing music that boosts troop morale\, unit esprit\, and military operations. The 195th also performs for a broad array of community events such as “Home Days\,” parades\, community concerts\, and commissioning events.

We are a friendly and meditative group of people creating circles or “mandalas” with colorful and various stitches in the search of emotional calm and mental & spiritual wisdom. She has taught at the Library during some Jumpstart Januarys\, and exhibited in the past two Accordion Book Shows hosted by Amy Hand. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library is pleased to offer a walking tour of downtown Camden on Fridays at 4:00 p.m.\, from June 28 through September 13. This entertaining and educational walking tour features a handful of historic sites in downtown Camden\, including the Camden Public Library grounds and Amphitheatre\, which were designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013. Learn about the people\, places\, and industries that continue to make Camden a special destination. \n\n\n\nPlease note there is no walking tour on July 5 and July 12. The tours will resume on July 19. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe tour begins in the Children’s Garden of the Camden Public Library on Atlantic Avenue and ends at the Village Green. Moderate walking involved; suitable for all ages. Much of the tour will be conducted outdoors and will be weather dependent. \n\n\n\nThe tour is free of charge and open to all\, though donations (to benefit the library) are cheerfully accepted. DESCRIPTION:Camden Public Library welcomes Patent & Trademark Resource Center representative John Hutchinson for a presentation all about patents on Thursday\, June 20\, at 6:30 p.m. This program is in-person only. \n\n\n\nThe number of people applying for patents and trademarks greatly increased during the pandemic and remains high. Obtaining a patent can be important for an inventor\, and obtaining a trademark can be an important step in founding a business.  \n\n\n\nHutchinson will explain the basic concepts behind these intellectual properties\, how to get them\, and how to do a search on the official US Patent & Trademark database. He will also share a fun compilation of famous historical patents.  \n\n\n\nJohn Hutchinson is the Business Librarian at the Fogler Library at the University of Maine\, as well as the representative for the Patent & Trademark Resource Center (PTRC). SUMMARY:Camden Philosophical Society: Alasdair MacIntyre's "Dependent Rational Animals"
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society continues on the broad theme of philosophy as a way of living. The work to be discussed is Scottish-American moral and political philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s book Dependent Rational Animals. The hybrid gathering will be at 3:30 pm on Tuesday\, June 18. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom.  \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nMajor themes from the book that we expect to explore in June\, and possibly continuing into July\, are: Why it is important for humans to pay attention to and understand what we have in common with other intelligent animals; what makes “attention to human vulnerability and disability important for moral philosophers”; and how it is that developing the “virtues of rational independence and the virtues of acknowledged dependence” require social groups (communities) that differ from either the modern family or the national state. \n\n\n\nDependent Rational Animals was written in 1999 and is available for free online here: https://vdocuments.net/alasdair-macintyre-dependent-rational-animals.html?page=1 Given the two-month gap until our next meeting\, we recommend that those planning to participate in our June discussion read significant portions of the relatively short book. Readings should definitely include the Preface and first two chapters\, which cover the first two of MacIntyre’s three main themes. Chapters 3-5 are not vital. Chapters 6-11 cover the third theme. 12 is not vital\, albeit interesting. The last chapter begins with a useful summary and a discussion of grounding. The last bit on Nietzsche can be skipped by those not interested in Nietzsche. \n\n\n\nMacIntyre is a self-described Aristotelian-Thomist (as in Aquinas). He is a renowned proponent of virtue ethics\, notably in his 1981 book After Virtue\, and also of communitarianism in contrast to liberal capitalism.

DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, June 13\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom\, all about climate-friendly home energy upgrades. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in the Picker Room and on Zoom. Weatherization and electrification can help save money and make your home more comfortable\, while shrinking your carbon footprint — but they don’t always come cheap\, and they require careful planning. \n\n\n\nLearn from local climate journalist Annie Ropeik and energy auditor Colin McCullough of All-Around Home Performance in Gardiner about how they worked together to assess the needs of an 125-year-old home in Camden\, and get up to speed on the benefits\, possibilities and resources for taking on these kinds of projects in your own space.  \n\n\n\n\nAnnie Ropeik is an independent climate journalist based in Camden. She writes for Energy News Network\, The Maine Monitor and other publications and serves on the board of the Society of Environmental Journalists. She was a 2023 Journalism Fellow with the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative\, covering Maine’s transition off heating oil. Annie spent about a decade as a local public radio reporter\, creating the climate desk at New Hampshire Public Radio in 2020 and covering local climate adaptation for NPR. A Boston University graduate\, she grew up in Silver Spring\, Maryland.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nColin McCullough worked as a home energy auditor for the MassSave program for 10 years\, and more recently worked for Efficiency Maine as the Senior Technical Field Representative for the Quality Assurance program.  Colin is a Certified Energy Auditor from the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and is a trainer / proctor for BPI certification in Maine and teaches the building science courses at SMCC and KVCC. Putting his energy efficiency experience to work\, he’s been renovating his 1915 home in Farmingdale to become a high-performance\, net-zero energy home. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe talk is part of the Camden Talks Climate series put on by CamdenCAN\, CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) is a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday\, June 11\, at 6:30 PM for a fascinating and interactive experience using MIT’s EN-ROADS climate simulator\, led by a Paul Stancioff\, a trained EN-ROADS facilitator. \n\n\n\nThis presentation demonstrates an engaging\, accessible\, but highly sophisticated climate policy simulator\, inviting the audience to propose various climate solutions and giving instant feedback on their long-term climate impact. The simulator allows users to explore the impact that dozens of policies—such as electrifying transport\, pricing carbon\, and improving agricultural practices—have on hundreds of factors like energy prices\, temperature\, air quality\, and sea level rise. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDeveloped by Climate Interactive\, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative\, and Ventana Systems\, En-ROADS is a system dynamics model carefully grounded in the best available science\, and has been calibrated against a wide range of existing integrated assessment\, climate\, and energy models. \n\n\n\nPaul Stancioff\, retired professor of Physics at UMF\, recently returned to his hometown of Camden. He and his wife\, Cynthia Stancioff\, are actively engaged in promoting policies and actions to address the impact that human produced greenhouse gases are having on the planet.

SUMMARY:Yoga in the Amphitheatre with Denyse Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Please note that there will be no session on August 13\, and that there will be a session on Thursday\, August 22 instead of Friday\, August 23. The rest of the sessions follow the regular schedule. \n\n\n\nYoga in the Amphitheatre is back! Enjoy breathtaking views of Camden Harbor while being guided through a sequence of Yoga poses that are at once\, grounding and uplifting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClasses are taught by Denyse Robinson\, Certified Yoga Teacher and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 am starting Friday\, June 11th throughout the summer until September 6.  A limited number of mats\, blocks\, and straps are provided.  If you like a blanket for practice\, please bring one. All levels are welcome. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation: Navigating Anxiety with Present Moment Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-hour program designed to introduce participants to the transformative practice of mindfulness meditation on Thursday\, June 6\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. This program is in-person only. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a world of constant change\, upheaval\, and non-stop connectivity\, anxiety is on the rise. Through the practice of mindfulness\, we can learn to take the wind out of the sails of anxiety and other disturbing emotions and cultivate some peace of mind. This session will offer a blend of theoretical understanding and practical exercises\, guided by an experienced instructor. Participants will explore the origins of mindfulness\, understand its role in managing anxiety\, and practice techniques to foster present moment awareness. The session concludes with a Q&A\, providing an opportunity to discuss experiences and clarify doubts. Whether you’re new to mindfulness or looking to deepen your practice\, this program will offer valuable insights into cultivating a more peaceful and mindful approach to life. No prior experience is necessary; all are welcome to discover the benefits of mindfulness meditation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert G. Schneider\, MS\, LCPC-c is a therapist based in Rockland\, Maine\, with nearly 25 years of experience in mindfulness meditation. He is also the author of The Guru’s Touch\, a semi-autobiographical novel. His studies and practice in the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism inform his therapeutic approach\, blending traditional counseling techniques with mindfulness to support his clients’ mental and emotional well-being.

Bring your teens\, as this book was written to inspire both adults and young adults! \n\n\n\nA captivating biography that tells the inspiring story of Frances Perkins\, the first woman to hold a Cabinet-level position in the United States. \n\n\n\nAs Secretary of Labor under President Franklin D. Roosevelt\, Perkins played a key role in shaping American labor policy during the New Deal era\, fighting for workers’ rights\, social justice\, and economic security. \n\n\n\nFrom her early life in Maine to her historic tenure in Washington\, D.C.\, this book traces Perkins’ remarkable journey and highlights her enduring legacy as a trailblazing woman in American politics. Written in an engaging and accessible style even for young readers\, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in American history\, women’s history\, and the fight for social justice. \n\n\n\n\nRuth Cashin Monsell of Camden\, Maine\, winters in Charleston\, SC. She has always actively pursued the arts\, including music\, painting\, and theater\, and enjoyed writing. This is her debut book. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Illinois Wesleyan University\, began work on a Master s degree on a Fellowship at American University\, and received her M.S. in Education at Hofstra University. In her 20’ s she began an-18 year career in education and taught English\, American history\, art\, music\, and theater arts\, in New York\, Connecticut\, and Maine. Ruth is the mother of two sons and has two grandsons.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to join the artists at an opening reception on Saturday\, June 1\, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is pleased to show a group exhibit titled “Above Us Only Sky” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of June*. In the spirit of “UMVA Members and Friends\,” the exhibitors include three UMVA (Union of Visual Artists) member artists\, Mary Brooking of Westbrook\, Jane Gilbert of Orland and Key West\, and Deb Vendetti of South Hope\, along with invited guest Dee Peppe of Rockland. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition’s title\, “Above Us Only Sky\,” refers to collective dialogues with light and sky during the group’s stay at the Baldwin House on Monhegan Island. The exhibition also includes images collected in other locations\, inspired by Monhegan as “muse.” \n\n\n\n\nMary Brooking\, “Semi-Precious”\, acrylic\n\n\n\nDeb Vendetti\, “Spectral Echo”\, panoramic photo\, micro-piezo print\n\n\n\nJane Gilbert\, “Afternoon Light”\n\n\n\nDee Peppe\, “Monhegan Light”\, photograph\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMary Brooking uses many layers of paint\, frequently obliterating certain elements as the paintings progress\, “challenging myself always to distill and reduce my original reaction to its exact essence and nothing more\, my paintings are spaces meant to test the balance between reality and abstraction”.  \n\n\n\nAfter a career as an Art Therapist and a Fine Art Photographer\, Jane Gilbert returned to her first love\, painting\, and now paints full time in Key West and Maine. “For about twenty years\, I’ve been meeting my friend and fellow artist Deb Vendetti on Monhegan Island for a week of painting\, photographing\, and simply enjoying nature. In recent years\, we’ve been joined by other artists\, and just last summer were able to experience the sweeping panorama of sky\, ocean\, Manana Island and the mainland from the Baldwin Cottage”. \n\n\n\nInvited guest and UMVA ‘friend”\, Photographer Dee Peppe will exhibit images that are inspired by the color of light after sunset\, including both natural and artificial lights. Peppe is a longtime local\, fine-art photographer and professor at various Maine colleges. She has led photographic travel workshops to France\, Belize\, and Guatemala and has been teaching photography in the workshop format since 1990. \n\n\n\nUMVA member Deb Vendetti\, who organized this exhibition\, remarks\, “The importance of quiet time\, in a supported and unstructured format and in the fellowship of other artists\, immersing oneself in a place\, these are the moments of grace when one is removed from distraction and invited to enter the dialog”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Union of Maine Visual Artists is a non-profit organization that promotes and advocates for the visual arts\, artists\, and all arts supporters. DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this program is being rescheduled to a date in December. Please stay tuned and join us then! \n\n\n\nThe Center for Wildlife Studies “Wild Maine” Series\, in partnership with the Camden Public Library\, continues with a presentation with CWS President and Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology Jack Hopkins all about identifying mammal tracks and scat in Maine.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Hopkins is a wildlife ecologist who is broadly interested in understanding how animals respond to human impacts and a changing environment. He primarily uses stable isotopes and other chemical tracers in combination with a variety of field methods and statistical approaches to investigate species interactions\, wildlife-habitat relationships\, and the foraging behavior of carnivores. He is also currently active in using chemical data from laser ablation mass spectrometry to develop statistical models for applications in wildlife forensics. Much of Jack’s research is motivated by the needs of state\, federal\, provincial\, or tribal agencies. As such\, informing wildlife conservation\, management\, and policy is often the primary goal of his research. \n\n\n\nBefore co-founding CWS\, Jack worked as a faculty member at Unity College and as a Postdoctoral Scholar at UC San Diego\, UC Merced\, University of Alberta\, and Peking University in China. SUMMARY:"A Return to Nepal for Two Friends: The Annapurna Circuit\, a Visit to One's Past Peace Corps Post\, and Some Kathmandu Time" with Dan Matlack and Greg Dorr
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes travelers Dan Matlack and Greg Dorr for a fascinating travel program on Thursday\, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. recounting their original experiences in Nepal and their recent return trip. Dorr traveled to Nepal in 1974\, and Matlack lived there in the Peace Corps from 1984-1986. After all these years\, they recently returned to Nepal together. They will share an account of their experiences in Nepal then\, and now. This program will be in-person only.  \n\n\n\nTheir return trip included three sections: \n\n\n\n\nA two-week trek around the Annapurna Massif\, walking up the Manang River to the 17\,700 foot Thorung La Pass.\n\n\n\nA week-long visit to a hospital that opened in 2011 in the district of Achham\, in remote the Far Western Region (Dan’s former Peace Corps post).\n\n\n\nLast\, a week in Kathmandu.\n\n\n\n\nGreg and Dan will share photos and adventures from each portion of the trip. They will adapt their presentation if there is particular interest from the audience. Join us for this spectacular adventure and their trip down memory lane! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreg Dorr is a retired attorney who has lived in Camden for many years after living and working in states farther south. He and his wife Susan have been active for years in various town affairs. After Greg retired in 2007 he and Susan joined the US Peace Corps and served in Malawi for two years. Keenly interested in anthropology and travel\, he also plays the fiddle and mandolin and is an active volunteer in local organizations including Midcoast Habitat for Humanity’s Restore.  \n\n\n\nDan Matlack was a Latin teacher and admission officer in independent schools. Prior to teaching he served in the US Peace Corps in Nepal from 1984-1986. Blessed by a long standing family connection to Camden\, he spent six summers in Camden working for restaurants and contractors\, lived here for a year before heading to Nepal\, and then retired here with his wife Allison in 2021. Broadly interested in history\, geography\, and languages as well as teaching he led student trips to Europe and India. He also volunteers locally. He met Greg working for Midcoast Habitat for Humanity’s Restore two years ago.

SUMMARY:(New Group!) Coastal Friendship Circle - Embracing Neurodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Friendship Circle\, embracing neurodiversity and mentoring each other! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new social\, educational and supportive friendship circle is forming for neurodiverse adults living in coastal Maine. Join us for one or both of the start-up meetings (Belfast and Camden) and share what you can bring to the group and what kind of support you would most like to get from this group of friends. The Coastal Friendship Circle’s first meeting will be held on Saturday\, May 18\, at 1:00 p.m. in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library. \n\n\n\nAfter the initial two meetings\, one meeting each month will be a planning meeting and indoor activity and the other meeting of each month will be a community activity decided upon by the group.   \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this group is to provide an opportunity for neurodiverse people including adults on the autism spectrum\, with Tourettes\, AD/HD\, or learning differences to meet up with others and find common ground\, and to share interests and activities. SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate: "Resilient Waterfront Design Transformations—How Landscape Architects are Reshaping Resilience with Coastal Communities" with Blake Sanborn
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, May 16\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom featuring Blake Sanborn\, Senior Project Manager at Richardson & Associates\, Landscape Architects. \n\n\n\nFlooding is hitting Camden close to home\, as it is for many Maine communities. Blake Sanborn has partnered with communities around the country to co-create actionable plans to address flood concerns and authored design strategies that map out incremental steps to a more resilient future. In his talk\, Sanborn will take a look at how landscape architects address flooding while building connectivity\, habitat\, public art\, biodiversity\, knowledge\, wellness\, and places to gather. His talk will feature examples spanning from mega-projects in major cities to a small public schoolyard retrofit.  \n\n\n\nSanborn now makes Camden his home\, and is keenly interested in how Camden approaches the questions facing the harbor and the many opportunities presented by both sea level rise and repeated high-rainstorm flooding.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSanborn gave a well received talk to the Camden Garden Club on this topic this past winter. This May’s talk\, part of CamdenCAN’s Camden Talks Climate series\, is designed to both inform residents about harbor possibilities\, and encourage robust conversations about the climate-induced changes ahead. The event with be held at the Camden Public Library\, and will be in person and broadcast via zoom. \n\n\n\nBlake Sanborn is at the forefront of the climate conversation in Maine having spent over 20 years designing and implementing public and private sector open spaces across the US and abroad. After growing up in Gorham\, Blake received a degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and has served as a Principal of AECOM’s Landscape Architecture and Urban Design studio prior to joining his current firm\, Richardson and Associates. His work has received recognition for design excellence from the American Society of Landscape Architects where he has served as an executive committee member and chair of the sustainability committee.  \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person at the library as well as on Zoom.
