SUMMARY:On Exhibit: "Works on Paper" by Douglas Smith
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library welcomes Rockland-based artist Douglas Smith for his exhibit “Works on Paper” in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of September. Smith will present a selection of works on paper in various media to include watercolor\, pastel\, and gouache.  \n\n\n\nThe public is invited to the exhibit’s opening reception to view the works and meet the artist on Saturday\, September 7\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nDouglas Smith attended the Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver\, CO\, and the Lyme Academy of Fine Art\, Old Lyme\, CT\, where he studied portrait painting and received the first Stobart Foundation Scholarship for outdoor painting. Smith moved to Maine in 2004. He has travelled and painted on location in Europe\, Mexico\, Russia\, and Alaska. Thank you! \n\n\n\nWe welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. A staff member will collect and forward your information to a volunteer who will contact you to make alternative arrangements. \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring donations directly to the Library – there is no storage available at this time. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support of the Camden Public Library!

SUMMARY:Indoor Yoga Flow Class with Denyse
DESCRIPTION:Now there’s yoga at the library all year long! Denyse Robinson leads an all-levels yoga flow class on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Picker Room. Bring your own mat if you have one\, although Denyse will have a few extras as well as blocks and straps. \n\n\n\nWe begin each class with breathwork\, meditation\, and setting the intention to connect with our higher selves\, the Earth and one another. \n\n\n\nWe typically commence the flow with some sun salutations\, and then move to standing poses\, balance poses\, and then seated poses into final relaxation. This Flow class is linked with the breath so that each movement corresponds with an inhale and an exhale and is a new and varied sequence of yoga poses each class.

Courtesy of Peter Roberts.\n\n\n\nJoin us for the first program of Discovery History Month on Tuesday\, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room featuring Maine State Archivist Kate McBrien. \n\n\n\nIn 1912\, the State of Maine evicted a community of African American and white residents from their homes on Malaga Island. Racism\, economic struggles\, and eugenics all led to the devastation of this community.  \n\n\n\nThe program will explore the history behind this story that was hidden for so many years.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nKate McBrien serves as the Maine State Archivist\, overseeing the archival preservation and management of state records at the Maine State Archives in Augusta. Before this role\, Kate worked at the Maine Historical Society and Maine State Museum in their curatorial and public engagement departments. At the State Museum\, she researched and curated the award-winning exhibit “Malaga Island\, Fragmented Lives” about the Malaga Island community.”  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThis program is a part of the Camden Public Library’s “Discover History Month” series of history-themed programs\, events\, and exhibits. CLICK HERE for more special Discover History Month programs! DESCRIPTION:Falmouth Hurricane\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library will host another event in the Camden Talks Climate series cosponsored by the town of Camden and CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) on Thursday\, October 3\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Picker Room and on Zoom. \n\n\n\nDr. Kerry Emanuel\, emeritus professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, will present on the long and interesting history of hurricanes that have affected Maine. Emanuel will also talk about recent scientific advances that show us how hurricane risk is changing in midcoast Maine\, as well as destructive winter storms that have plagued us in recent times. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid program and will take place both in-person and on Zoom. His specialty is hurricane physics and he was the first to investigate how long-term climate change might affect hurricane activity. \n\n\n\nEmanuel is the author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers\, and three books\, including Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes\, published by Oxford University Press and aimed at a general audience\, and What We Know about Climate Change\, published by the MIT Press and now in its third edition. Bathing suits not necessary! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAmy Hopkins will share her story that led to the creation of Saltwater Mountain Company –– a business that highlights the science and magic of cold-water dipping and its timely impact on women’s empowerment\, mental health and community.  \n\n\n\nInspired by experience\, research\, and her “Dip Down to Rise Up” movement\, Amy will educate on the how\, why\, and when of a cold-water dipping practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Hopkins has dedicated her entire career to supporting women’s health. With her collective experience as birthing nurse\, massage therapist\, entrepreneur and community leader\, Amy inspires with heart\, humor and hope. Creating safe spaces and experiences where women are encouraged to trust themselves is Amy’s superpower.

SUMMARY:Philosophical Society: A.I. and the Future of Work
DESCRIPTION:What will the future of “work” look like? What part does work play in our psychological well being? What constitutes meaningful work? These are some of the questions the Camden Philosophical Society will address on Oct. 15\, at the third session in a series of discussions on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The group discussed generative AI in August and September\, focusing on the technology itself\, the ethics and the philosophical quandaries this new technology raises. \n\n\n\nThe October session will highlight the impacts on work. Each of the articles for this session puts forward a different view on this topic and\, together\, they encourage us to take a step back from the “technology” itself and instead explore our own concepts of work and its meaning in a rapidly changing technological society.   \n\n\n\nThe Society’s meeting on Tuesday\, Oct. 15\, will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm EDT on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to participate via Zoom\, please email sarahmiller@usa.net. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the morning of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start with the short Prologue by Hannah Arendt to The Human Condition (attached as a PDF). Arendt frames our discussion by questioning how the advancement of technology will impact our relationship to work and potentially to each other. Overall\, she asks us to “think about what we are doing” as our world and the choices we must make become increasingly complex.  \n\n\n\nOur next reading takes a closer look at what makes work meaningful. Their work will be based on current and projected sea-level rise and storm surge data. \n\n\n\nThis Oct. 15 event is the first of a fall/winter series of public meetings/workshops. This session is intended to provide background on the project\, preliminary site analysis\, and an outline for the community-based planning process. Kate believed death was an extension of life\, a transition that all living beings experience. \n\n\n\nDuring Kate’s battle with cancer\, she began writing poetry seriously. She described her creative process as channeling universal energies and wisdom onto the page. In stunning detail and profound prose\, she shared pivotal moments in her own life that shaped her earthly mind and body and allowed her to exit this life on her own terms. \n\n\n\nAmy Banks\, MD\, is a a Lexington psychiatrist\, author\, and teacher. She is the 2022 winner of the Slovenian Union of America Literary Competition. This spooky sound bathing session will take place on Thursday\, October 31\, at 6:00 PM in the Amphitheatre. \n\n\n\nOn All Hallow’s Eve we will be bathing the Amphitheatere in mystical sound to help transport you on an inner journey. Think of this as sonic meditation\, best experienced in a very relaxed position with closed eyes. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the exhibit Opening Reception on Saturday\, November 2\, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.! Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\n“Autumn Reflections” by class instructor Linda Leach.\n\n\n\nThe Camden Public Library is delighted to welcome artists from the Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education art classes for a group exhibit during the month of November\, titled “Visual Enrichment\, Collective Delight: The Joys of Communal Creativity.” \n\n\n\nThis exhibit is a showcase of art created by students and instructors in Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education art classes. Featured pieces include those created by adult students in oil painting\, watercolor\, pottery\, sewing\, paper craft\, and woodworking classes. Five Town Adult Ed was founded in 1969 as the first adult education program in Maine\, and many of the students and teachers have been participating in or teaching art classes for over 30 years as a part of this inspiring community. DESCRIPTION:This program is part of MECollab\, a collaborative programming partnership between libraries throughout the state of Maine. The organizer from this program is Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual program on Zoom that will take place on Thursday\, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. To register\, please visit the registration page here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElection season can be tough. We focus on our side of an issue\, our point of view. We often see what divides us from others.  \n\n\n\nBut\, there are so many things that unite us. Sharing favorite childhood memories\, rooting for the same team\, gushing over our favorite shared authors. We’re all human and we have so many things to share with each other\, even when we feel divided—especially when we feel divided. \n\n\n\nCome together with other Mainers for this virtual program where we’ll focus on the many wonderful things that we share with each other. This isn’t the time for political debate\, so please leave your politics at the door. This is time to come together to discover what unites us.

SUMMARY:Camden Talks Climate: "Town Solar—How Communities Can Support Renewable Energy and Save Money"
DESCRIPTION:Solar power is providing energy independence\, cost savings\, and reduction of fossil fuel emissions in neighboring towns. \n\n\n\nJoin this Camden Talks Climate event\, hosted by CamdenCAN (Climate Action Now) in partnership with the Camden Public Library on Thursday November 14\, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. Thomaston Town Planner John Fancy and Lincolnville Town Administrator Dave Kinney will talk about how municipalities that have invested in solar arrays have reduced large electrical bills\, gone to 100% clean energy for municipal energy\, and in some places earned back significant dollars that can be reinvested in other sustainable initiatives. \n\n\n\nMunicipal solar panels in Lincolnville.\n\n\n\nJohn Fancy\, Thomaston’s Project Planner\, will explain how that village significantly reduced electricity bills over the last 14 years (and have paid off the bonds). Dave Kinney\, Lincolnville’s Town Administrator\, will discuss his town’s approach to going toward 100% clean energy\, providing financial benefits as well. \n\n\n\nWe’ll hear how towns are building upon those successes to reduce carbon emissions in other areas. The evening will finish with an extensive question and answer period so that attendees can discuss how Camden can move toward 100% clean municipal energy while also receiving cost savings \n\n\n\nCurrently Camden leases a solar array from Revision Energy at Sagamore Farm that covers 7 to 8% of the town’s energy needs. Town solar projects take perseverance and citizen involvement. Yet the benefits lead to reduced carbon emissions\, and often increased revenue that can be invested in other sustainable programs\, eg.\, EV chargers\, weatherization programs\, and low-income home retrofit programs. Dave has spent 4 years in the private sector and 34 years in the public sector\, currently the Town Administrator for Lincolnville. Dave is also a licensed professional engineer. Dave drives an EV. \n\n\n\nMunicipal solar panels in Lincolnville.\n\n\n\nJohn Fancy is a Maine native who grew up in the greater Portland area\, moved to the mid-coast in 1971\, and now lives in a totally electric home in Appleton with 18 solar panels on the roof.John spent over 50 years working with public and private water and wastewater operations\, including systems from Washington to Cumberland Counties and all in between. His specialty is finding solutions to operations that are not performing as they were designed to. John was a consultant to the Waldoboro Utility District for over 40 years and now works with the Town of Thomaston. Wastewater systems are large users of electricity since they often have high horsepower motors in pumps and process equipment. One solution now available is the use of solar panels. This was the case in Thomaston where John developed and implemented a solar program beginning in 2010. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis evening is being presented by CamdenCAN (ClimateActionNow) a citizen-led organization committed to reducing Camden’s contribution to climate change through local action\, education\, advocacy\, and resources.
