In the winter of 2011 I learned fabric collage from Susan Carlson. I immediately saw the limitless possibilities this technique offered. I was hooked. Using fabric for the pallet allows for a playful and liberating way to work with this medium. \n\n\n\nThe technique is much like making a mosaic. I let the imagery and design elements build spontaneously\, intuitively\, without the interference of a predetermined result. In this way I am often surprised by the direction a piece takes once begun. The hours of slowly assembling and layering the hundreds of small cuttings of fabric give each subject its depth and texture. \n\n\n\nThe process is deeply absorbing\, meditative. They will share a brief overview of the history of TB as an incurable pandemic as well as about the sanatorium movement. What did these institutions achieve and what did they not? We will learn about famous writers who died of TB (John Keats\, the Brontë sisters\, and many more)\, and explore some famous examples of TB in poetry and fiction. \n\n\n\nCarolyn Locke and Laura Bonazzoli will then share how and why they each came to write their own literary works featuring tuberculosis. Carolyn will read from her new book of poetry\, Between: Ray and Eva\, 1938-39 and Laura Bonazzoli will read from her recently released novel\, Our Share of Morning. A graduate of Bates College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and of Goddard College with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing\, she taught English and humanities for many years at the secondary level. \n\n\n\nShe has previously published three poetry collections—Always This Falling\, The Place We Become\, and The Riddle of Yes—and the haibun Not One Thing: Following Matsuo Basho’s Narrow Road to the Interior\, which combines haiku\, prose\, and original photographs in a meditative journal about her travels in Japan. Her poem “Thoughts on Migration” was selected for the 2022 Maine Literary Award for Short Poetry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaura Bonazzoli is the author of two novels: Consecration Pond (Toad Hall Editions 2022)\, a novel-in-stories set along a fictional pond in rural Maine; and Our Share of Morning (Sibylline Press 2025)\, a historical novel set in a New England mill town in the 1930s and 40s. Our Share of Morning was a 2026 finalist for the American Fiction Award for family sagas and a 2025 runner-up for the New England Book Festival Award for regional fiction. \n\n\n\nLaura’s short stories and essays have appeared in print and online journals\, and her poetry has been published in more than thirty literary magazines and several anthologies. This exhibit will feature multiple artifacts\, 3D models\, and more from their reclaimed-material construction and transformation projects. All are welcome to visit the exhibit during the library’s open hours. An opening reception for the exhibit will occur on Saturday\, October 10 from 2 PM – 4 PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistoric preservation has often been understood as an effort to arrest change — to retain buildings\, landscapes\, and objects as physical evidence of the past. But preservation and permanence are not necessarily the same thing. Deconstruction presents another possibility: a building can be dismantled without being erased\, its materials and artifacts recovered\, its construction methods studied\, and its history carried forward into new forms. \n\n\n\nSecond Story Builders works within this space between preservation and transformation\, using deconstruction and reclaimed-material construction to connect the material heritage of Maine’s older buildings with the people\, skills\, and ideas that will shape what comes next. The exhibition considers what it means to preserve history not simply by holding onto the past\, but by allowing what has value within it to remain active\, useful\, and meaningful across generations. \n\n\n\nAmong the work featured are materials and artifacts recovered from the Ephraim Barrett House\, a ca. 1800 residence formerly on Chestnut Street in Camden\, demonstrating how the contents of an historic building can be preserved and transformed for new purposes.
