DESCRIPTION:Due to the stormy weather predicted for Friday\, the Stewardship Education Alliance (S.E.A) Fair will now take place a the CAMDEN-ROCKPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL in the gymnasium at 39 Knowlton Street\, Camden. It’s only 0.6 miles from the library! S.E.A. Fair will still take place on Friday\, June 2\, 1 – 5 PM. \n\n\n\nParking is available along Knowlton Street or in the lot at 42 Knowlton Street. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, June 2\, from 1 – 5 p.m.\, the Stewardship Education Alliance and its sponsors Camden Public Library\, First National Bank\, First National Wealth Management\, and Lyman Morse Boatbuilding Inc. will host the third annual S.E.A. FAIR in the Camden Amphitheatre. Throughout the afternoon\, representatives of twenty environmental organizations will offer engaging exhibits and activities for all ages\, including games and activities for elementary and middle school students. \n\n\n\nParticipating organizations include Camden Street Tree Volunteers; Center for Wildlife Studies; Coastal Mountains Land Trust; Herring Gut Coastal Science Center; Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership; Knox-Lincoln County Soil/Water Conservation District; Maine Audubon; Maine Farmland Trust; Maine Department of Agriculture Conservation & Forestry; Maine Rural Water Association; Megunticook River Citizens Advisory Council; Megunticook Watershed Association; Merryspring Nature Center; Natural Resources Council of Maine; Rockport and Camden Conservation Commissions; Stewardship Education Alliance; Tanglewood Camp/4H; Watershed School Climate Action Leadership Lab and Wild Ones Midcoast Maine. \n\n\n\nAdditional activities will be hosted by students and teachers from Camden Five Hills High School; Hope Elementary School; Roots & Shoots Nature-based After School Program; Seaside Village Pre-School and S.E.A. Don’t miss this chance to see Van Dusen’s brilliant gouache paintings and the printed books in which they appeared\, spanning his 23-year career as a children’s book author/illustrator – from Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee to BIG TRUCK Little Island. \n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome to meet Chris Van Dusen at the exhibit opening and Read and Draw event on Saturday\, May 6 at 1:00 PM in the Picker Room! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Chris Van Dusen\n\n\n\n\nI was born in Portland\, Maine on St. Patrick’s Day\, 1960. As a child\, my brothers and I would spend hours drawing pictures. We didn’t have video games or computers to entertain us\, so we drew instead. One of my brothers would sketch intricate war scenes. Another would draw animals so realistic you’d swear they were breathing. My specialty was aliens\, robots and monsters. \n\n\n\nDr. Seuss and Robert McCloskey were my heroes. I loved the rhythm of Dr. Seuss’ words and I was fascinated by the meticulous detail of Robert McCloskey’s illustrations. I had no idea back then that I’d end up writing and illustrating children’s books when I grew up. \n\n\n\nAfter high school\, I studied fine art at The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and graduated with a BFA in 1982. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. First I was a waiter\, and then I was offered a part-time job at a magazine for teenagers. Eventually I started drawing cartoons and illustrations for the magazine and my career as an illustrator was born. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than ten years I worked as a freelance illustrator specializing in art for kids. I was doing mostly editorial work and my illustrations appeared in magazines like Nickelodeon\, Family Fun\, and Disney Adventures. One day I started thinking about drawing a picture of a boat stuck high up in a tree. I thought that would be a really funny and intriguing illustration. At the same time\, a refrain kept running through my head- “Mr. Magee and his little dog\, Dee/ Hopped in the car and drove down to the sea”. The combination of these two things eventually became my first book\, “Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee” which was published in 2000. I’ve been busy writing and illustrating children’s books ever since. \n\n\n\nNow I live in a beautiful little town on the coast of Maine with my lovely wife Lori and a yellow lab named Opal. We have two sons\, our oldest\, Ethan lives in California and our younger son\, Tucker\, lives in Maine. Life is good. \n\n\n\n\nChris Van Dusen

Read about it below: \n\n\n\nOn View Now at Page GalleryCollaborative Mural Project After Dahlov Ipcar’s Bright Barnyard \n\n\n\n While their friends cozied up to woodstoves with cocoa and businesses throughout town closed due to record-breaking cold temperatures\, nine intrepid young artists gathered in the warmth of a collaborative studio space in Page Gallery at 23 Bay View Street in Camden. Each February the gallery gives its walls over to the children of the community for its Youth Art Exhibition. This year’s prompt is to create a piece of art depicting the animals you love best. \n\n\n\nProminently displayed on a wall of its own\, the mural is a featured work in the show. After shedding coats\, hats and mittens and claiming a spot around one of two long work tables filled with panels\, palettes\, brushes\, paints and a variety of collage materials\, the gallery’s owner\, Colin Page\, provided an overview on the artist and work selected this year. The children would recreate a piece from one of Maine’s best known and most loved artists\, Dahlov Ipcar (1917-2017). Born into a family of artists\, Dahlov’s home was filled with creativity and her imagination encouraged. Her love of animals inspired the decorative patterns and geometric designs that would become her artistic signature. Colin explained that each child would work on a section of Dahlov’s painting from her book Bright Barnyard\, a colorful scene of chickens\, roosters\, guinea hens\, chicks and geese first published in 1966. Once complete\, their individual efforts would be hung together to reveal the full painting. “Copying artists is a great way to learn\, gather ideas and inspiration\, practice skills and create something new\,” said Colin. \n\n\n\nUndaunted by the blank panels before them\, the artists set to work\, squeezing paint onto palettes\, mixing colors and selecting brushes. Gallery staff took on the role of studio assistants\, helping to clean brushes\, refresh water glasses and track down beans\, yarn and pasta for mixed media needs. Gallery manager\, Kirsten Surbey\, read Ipcar’s Bright Barnyard aloud while the children painted. The atmosphere was relaxed\, cooperative and fun. The children\, ranging in age from 8 to 13 years old\, enjoyed working alongside their peers and took breaks to look at each other’s paintings and get ideas. \n\n\n\nText accompanying the exhibit\, encourages visitors to explore The Farnsworth Art Museum in neighboring Rockland to see Dahlov’s 1965 Jungle Pool painting in person. “Dahlov is a national treasure\, and she believed that children should be free to express themselves artistically with any materials they might find\, and in ways that might be different. She used her powers of observation and pleasure in art-making to draw us into the possibilities of our imagination. The Farnsworth invites children and their adults to explore Dahlov’s Jungle Pool and the creations of many artists living and working in Maine today during our 75th Anniversary Year\,” said Jane Bianco\, Farnsworth curator.   \n\n\n\nThe Youth Art Exhibition will be on display through February 28th. Gallery visitors are invited to participate in activities stationed throughout the exhibition including\, community painting\, weaving\, puppet making and paper cutting activities. In collaboration with the Camden Public Library\, the children’s librarian will convene a special Saturday story time in the gallery on February 25th from 1:00-2:00 pm and will host a Creative Art Afternoon in the gallery from 4:00-5:00 pm on Thursday\, February 23rd. DESCRIPTION:Expectant and nursing parents are encouraged to join a community nursing circle in the Children’s Room of the Camden Library every 4th Wednesday from 4:30p to 5:30pm. The group welcomes families of all stripes and nurslings of all ages. Come with your nursing-related questions\, concerns or curiosities\, or come simply to commune.  \n\n\n\nThe gathering will be facilitated by Lulu Churchill (CLC) with input about library resources from children’s librarian Amy Hand. Lulu Churchill completed her certification in Lactation Management through the Center for Breastfeeding at the Healthy Children Project.
