DESCRIPTION:We humans\, and the rest of the planet\, exist in a tightly bound web of interconnections. These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. If you have questions or would like to participate\, please email camdencan2025@gmail.com.  \n\n\n\nThe ultimate goal of these book discussions is to inform as well as expand one another’s understandings of the moment we are living in. One of the greatest actions to take to improve our current situation is to talk about it\, as well as forge new alliances and build community. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the many benefits of tai chi and qigong through the exploration of movements and principles. These beginning classes are beneficial for people of all levels of fitness—developing awareness\, relaxation\, energy\, flexibility\, strength\, balance\, and pleasure in the open air. \n\n\n\nTai Chi meets in the Amphitheatre every Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\nAnna Dembska is a certified teacher of Yang Family tai chi. She studies tai chi and qigong with Mike Shunney in Rockland and Zhong Xuechao (Master Bing) from Wudang Mountain\, China. She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun afternoon of making and trading Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) with Amy Hand and other artists! We will paint\, collage\, draw\, stamp\, and more. No experience necessary! This workshop will take place on Sunday\, February 22\, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Picker Room. Please register below. \n\n\n\nAll materials for creating and experimenting will be on hand\, from collage papers\, to stickers\, punches\, fancy scissors\, watercolors\, acrylic paints\, and all mediums of marker and pens\, including multiple fonts of letter stamps. You can also bring your own. DESCRIPTION:Sumner Robert’s exhibit of original\, alphabet-inspired prints\, titled “Sumner’s Abecedary for the Advanced Reader” will be on display in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of February.* The Public is invited to the exhibit reception to view the works\, meet the artist\, and learn about his process on Saturday\, February 21\, 3:00 – 4:00 PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Abecedary is an artistic rabbit hole I fell into and which took me three years to worm my way through. I made three rules for myself: I had to progress in alphabetical order\, make no decisions or sketching more than three letters in advance\, and keep the images simple. I stuck to the first two.  \n\n\n\n“What kept me going was the fun of learning about words\, selecting and practicing appropriate letterforms\, and the challenge of creating a meaningful image within the constraints of color block printing.” — Sumner Roberts \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHaving been a farmer and farrier for many years\, Sumner Roberts finally held on to the wrong horse for too long and damaged his back. Looking for something else to do with a similar level of beauty and craftsmanship but with less heavy lifting\, he happened to visit a printmaking studio and immediately knew where he wanted to be. \n\n\n\n* The Picker Room is also used for programs\, events\, and private meetings. Check the calendar and call the library to ensure the Picker Room is open for viewing.

DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Coast Audubon‘s series of nature talks in partnership with the Camden Public Library continues on Thursday\, February 19\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room with a presentation on Notes from the Hummingbird Corridor with Deb Soule. \n\n\n\nIn October of 2021\, a month after the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds left her gardens in Maine\, herbalist and author Deb Soule felt a compelling nudge. The hummingbirds asked Deb to follow their eastern migration route south the following autumn. Without hesitation\, she said yes\, and asked her friend\, poet Laura Brown-Lavoie\, to join her. \n\n\n\nJoin us in person at the Camden Library to hear about Notes from the Hummingbird Corridor\, a record of their pilgrimage\, following these small birds on their thousands-mile migration journey\, and connecting with fellow humans along the way. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Philosophical Society will take a detour from our recent discussions about The Will and Freedom to consider the path of Buddhist teachings as written by Stephen Batchelor. He is a prominent author known for his secular approach to Buddhism. With over a dozen published books\, including widely recognized titles such as Buddhism Without Beliefs (1997)\, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist (2010)\, and The Art of Solitude (2020). \n\n\n\nThe Jan. 20 session will\, as usual\, be a hybrid gathering from 3:30-5:30 pm Eastern Time on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to participate\, in-person at the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library or by Zoom. That goes for visitors\, as well as year-rounders in Maine\, and friends of the Society wherever you may be. \n\n\n\nIf you wish to join via Zoom\, please email sewright772@gmail.com. You will receive a Zoom invitation on the day of the meeting. Click on the “Join Zoom Meeting” link in that invitation at the time of the event \n\n\n\nBatchelor’s appeal lies with his ability to present Buddhist teachings in a highly approachable and applicable manner to our modern life. In fact\, Batchelor’s newest book\, Buddha\, Socrates and Us\, illuminates the significant ways in which questions and uncertainty and doubt\, as Socrates presented as a means to living an “examined life”\, are central to both Western and Eastern frameworks.  \n\n\n\nBatchelor shows how the Western imbued metaphysical interpretation of Buddhism is too narrowly understood to be considered “useful” in our 21st century culture but that when its teachings are understood as guidance in developing our reactions and interactions on a day to day experience\, then we begin to find possibilities in the application of these teachings. While giving us insight into the Buddha  (aka Siddhartha Guatama/Gotama) prior to enlightenment and the teachings of Socrates\, Batchelorbrings “the two together\, in a way\, to recognize the humanity that constitutes their being.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe primary reading will be a transcript from an interview with Stephen Batchelor from the Tricycle Talks podcast episode #132\, “Ethical Living in Uncertain Times”\, which can be read here. \n\n\n\nThe remaining two are supplemental but you may find helpful as additional material explaining more of Batchelor’s thinking. DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. In 1955\, when Sharon was 10\, her father purchased a former boys’ camp and the family moved from Connecticut to the old farmhouse on her current property. For the next six years\, Sharon and her family lived the country life\, learning about nature\, raising livestock\, and growing bountiful gardens. In 1961\, the family moved to Brunswick. \n\n\n\nAlthough the farm stayed in the family\, the house and land remained largely unoccupied until 1995 when Sharon’s son Eli built a cabin and moved to the farm. He spent the next five years (and more) restoring the land\, using low-impact methods to manage the woodlands and reclaim open spaces for buildings\, fields\, and gardens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2004\, Eli built a cabin for Sharon and the seed for Crystal Lake Farm & Nursery was planted. For the past 20 years\, mother and son have worked together to build their business and act as stewards of this small piece of Maine.

She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library. DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, welcomes Professor Nadia El-Shaarawi for a presentation on Thursday\, February 12\, at 6:30 PM in the Picker Room. \n\n\n\nThere are more than 123 million people displaced in the world today\, many of whom hail from\, or live in\, the Middle East and North Africa. Why has this region experienced so much forced migration and what is the significance of these many layered movements?  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Nadia El-Shaarawi will discuss the contours of displacement in and from the region\, with a focus on the politics of displacement and its effects on the people who live through it. We will explore histories of forced migration as well as the context and implications of displacement today.  \n\n\n\nWhile we will ground our conversation in the Middle East and North Africa\, we will also consider the relationships between migration and displacement in that region and US and global politics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNadia El-Shaarawi is author of the book Collateral Damages: Tracing the Debts and Displacements of the Iraq War\, published this year by University of California Press. This book\, based on long term ethnographic fieldwork with Iraqi refugees in Cairo\, Egypt\, seeks to tell a different story of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and the mass displacement it caused\, one that centers the stories and experiences of Iraqis. \n\n\n\nThe book critically examines the war as well as the humanitarian process of third-country refugee resettlement\, which international organizations and states hold up as one solution to displacement. She is also the co-editor\, with Stéphanie Larchanché\, of Migration and Health: Challenging the Borders of Care\, Belonging\, and Policy (Berghahn Books). \n\n\n\nNadia teaches classes on displacement\, migration\, borders\, humanitarianism\, and health in Global Studies and Anthropology at Colby College. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 39th Annual Camden Conference\, “Today’s Middle East: Power\, Politics\, & Players” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 20 – 22\, 2026.

These intersections are both our solution/salvation—it will take each and everyone of us working together to create a better world—and paradoxically it’s also these tightly bound systems that  are also causing the challenging conditions—droughts\, wildfires\, heat waves\, human migrations\, extreme weather\, biodiversity loss\, ocean acidification\, etc.— of our our current climate-changed world. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to get a better understanding of these interconnections\, meet other curious and engaged Midcoast residents\, and find ways to not only remain resilient during the upcoming decades\, CamdenCAN would like to invite you to join us for our Resilient Reading Group. \n\n\n\nThe reading group meets on second and fourth Tuesday afternoons\, 4:00 – 5:00 PM at Camden Public Library in the Picker Room. DESCRIPTION:Leer y Charlar is a Spanish language reading and conversation group. Members chat about each other’s lives in Spanish\, and then discuss the “article of the day” from an online Spanish language newspaper distributed prior to the meeting.  \n\n\n\nMeetings on the second Tuesday of the month will meet on Zoom only. She’s a fierce advocate for place-specific design and team-built success.  \n\n\n\nEmma’s projects find her interacting with complex networks of design and engineering professionals\, local craftsmen\, and regionally-sourced materials. In 2013\, Emma formed Emma Kelly Landscape LLC as an exciting new outlet for her passion and her recent work can be seen in publications such as Maine Home & Design and the Boston Globe Magazine. Even more recently\, Emma launched ColLab\, a collaborating laboratory of five independent\, women-owned landscape architecture practices working on projects throughout the Northeast.  As a founding principal of this groundbreaking new organization\, Emma is eager to capture the synergy of working with stellar peers who can drive the creative focus of projects further and support even more complex and far-reaching project needs. \n\n\n\nEmma received her master’s degree in Landscape Architecture\, with distinction\, from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University\, as well as her undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology and Religion. SUMMARY:Book Donations Open at the Blue Door Book Shed
DESCRIPTION:We welcome donations of materials that can be added to our collection or sold to support our programs\, including: \n\n\n\n\nHardcover\, paperback\, and audio books\n\n\n\nCDs and DVDs in cases\n\n\n\nPuzzles bagged inside boxes\n\n\n\n\nDue to space and sorting limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. \n\n\n\nAll items must be in good or better condition. Items in poor / unsellable condition\, or for which there is no market\, create a financial burden for the Library and extra work for volunteers. \n\n\n\n\nPlease do NOT bring: \n\n\n\n\nBooks with mold or mildew\, musty smell\, water damage\, missing dust jackets\, stained or torn covers\, broken spines\, writing inside\, or other physical damage;\n\n\n\nTextbooks\, condensed books\, self-published books\, encyclopedias\, journals\, or magazines;\n\n\n\nCassette or VHS tapes;\n\n\n\nContemporary fiction more than 10 years old;\n\n\n\nMedical\, health\, computer\, technology\, or reference books more than 2 years old.\n\n\n\n\n\nDonations may be brought in boxes or bags to the blue door book shed located in the Meadow Parking Lot on Atlantic Avenue on Tuesdays from 9am – 12pm. Please do not leave donations at any other time – the weather will get to them before our volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWe rely on volunteers who generously give their time to accept\, sort\, and pack your donations. Due to their time and our space limitations\, we can only accept 2 bags or boxes at a time. Please be prepared to wait for a few minutes while a volunteer accepts your donation. \n\n\n\nIf you have a donation larger than 2 bags/boxes or are unable to come on a Tuesday morning\, please call the Library at (207) 236-3440. A staff member will collect and forward your information to a volunteer who will contact you to make alternative arrangements. \n\n\n\nPlease do not bring donations directly to the Library – there is no storage available at this time. \n\n\n\nThank you for your support of the Camden Public Library!

She has also studied Yang Family tai chi with Grandmaster Yang Jun and San Shou two-person play with Dr. Jay Dunbar and Kathleen Cusick. Anna is a singer\, composer\, and voice teacher by profession\, and her tai chi teaching is informed by its many similarities with vocal technique\, which she has been practicing and teaching for many years. \n\n\n\nClasses are by donation\, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Camden Public Library.
