LIVE on FACEBOOK: Maine Mondays
Monday, March 30, 2020 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Each Monday on the Camden Public Library’s Facebook Page, Julia will read selections from books about Maine’s history.
The March 30 reading will be from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, A Midwife’s Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard Based on Her Diary 1785-1812. Drawing on the diaries of one woman in eighteenth-century Maine, this intimate history illuminates the challenges of daily life for early settlers of the New England frontier.
This book has special relevance for a number of reasons. March is Women’s History Month, and Martha Ballard is an exemplary Maine woman. As a midwife, she was truly one of the most important medical professionals in her community. Her meticulously kept diary provides readers with an unparalleled look into the social, economic, and religious life of the people living in the Kennebec River Valley in the late 1700’s. She provides detailed insight into the how the community dealt with and persevered through challenges, including epidemics.
