Explorations Read-Aloud: “Waldo Peirce and Ernest Hemingway: Mirror Image” by William Gallagher

Friday, June 3 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

Every Friday, at 11:00 am, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. This is a program to help keep our community connected to books during the pandemic when we are unable to meet in person.

For June 3, Coté will read aloud from William Gallagher’s essay about the friendship between painter Waldo Peirce and writer Ernest Hemingway. Summary: Waldo Peirce was an American painter, born in Bangor, Maine on December 17, 1884. He was both a prominent painter and a well-known character.  He was sometimes called “the American Renoir.” A long-time friend of Ernest Hemingway, of whom he painted the cover picture for Time magazine in 1937, he was once called “the Ernest Hemingway of American painters.” To which he replied, “They’ll never call Ernest Hemingway the Waldo Peirce of American writers.”

This essay traces Waldo Peirce’s lifelong friendship with Ernest Hemingway. A veteran of the American Field Service Ambulance Corps who won the Croix de Guerre for conspicuous bravery at the World War I battle of Verdun, Peirce met Hemingway in Paris in 1927. The two men traveled together to the Fiesta of San Fermin in Pamplona and Peirce was a visitor to the Hemingway home in Key West, often recording their adventures in oil paintings and beautifully illustrated scrapbooks. While they saw each other infrequently in later years, they met one last time in Tucson, Arizona in 1959 and corresponded thereafter. Hemingway passed away in July of 1961; Peirce followed suit in March of 1970. The essay is richly supported by material drawn from Peirce’s letters, housed at the Library of Congress.
