Explorations Read-Aloud: “The Luminous Brush: Painting with Egg Tempura” by Altoon Sultan

Friday, July 22 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

Every Friday, at 11:00 am, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. This is a program to help keep our community connected to books during the pandemic when we are unable to meet in person.

For July 22, in a salute to Camden on Canvas 2022, Coté will read aloud from Altoon Sultan’s book The Luminous Brush: Painting with Egg Tempura. Summary: Painting with egg yolks. Really? Egg tempera, an ancient painting technique that uses the egg yolk and water as the painting medium, is experiencing a renaissance. Today many people are attracted by traditional painting methods and natural products, and egg tempera is the perfect “natural” way to paint. This technique was used by the 15th-century Italian panel painters, such as Botticelli and Fra Angelico, and by 20th-century luminaries, such as Paul Cadmus and Andrew Wyeth. Author and renowned contemporary artist Altoon Sultan loves the fast-drying technique of egg tempera that results in clear form, crisp details, and luminous layering of color. The historical story is fascinating and the process surprising to most admirers and many artists in other mediums.
