Community Mindfulness Meditation Group
Wednesday, August 10 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
On 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, the public is invited to gather in the Camden Public Library’s Picker Room to participate in a free Community Mindfulness Meditation Group.
Community Mindfulness is an initiative which aims to blend foundational wellness practices with a light, supportive, and fun group experience. “This combination can often be fortifying to someone’s already existing practice,” says Silverman, “and at the same time, very useful for those who are new to these practices — and anyone in between”. Curiosity, simplicity, and gentleness will be the main themes of these gatherings. The format will include a greeting time, an introduction to the possibilities of the evening, a silent meditation (in chairs), followed by a group discussion for those who wish to stay and share experiences and ideas about practice or other related wellness topics. “This will always be a facilitated group, and any teaching in these gatherings will simply be peer-to-peer, as we can positively influence each other just by arriving with skillful intentions and some curiosity,” says Silverman.
The group should evolve to have a rotation of facilitators week to week. People have unique ways of holding space/hosting a group so it is beneficial to have a variety. To begin, the facilitation will be with Ben Silverman. Ben currently works in the mental health field with addiction treatment, is a reiki practitioner, and has a long standing meditation practice, starting with his initial 10 day Vipassana course in 2009. Over the years Ben has been part of many different types of contemplative groups, explored varieties of practices/philosophies, and experienced several longer-term retreats including solo retreats, monastic guest stays, and helping to develop Community Mindfulness initiatives in several different locations around the world. Ben feels that gathering people to do healthy things is the most efficient and rewarding hobby that exists.
