Changes to your IRA under the SECURE Act: What you need to know
Tuesday, March 10, 2020 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
On Tuesday, March 10, at 2020 at the Camden Public Library estate planning attorney Jesse Bifulco will summarize the The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act of 2019 changes in plain language. In some cases, people have saved more for retirement than they plan on spending. The SECURE Act profoundly changes how surviving spouses, disabled children, and others may benefit from an inherit qualified retirement account, IRA, 401k, 503b, or simple plan.
He will illustrate the pitfalls of improper beneficiary designations; show how and when to use trusts to protect the loss of retirement funds due to a surviving spouse’ nursing home costs; explain the higher income tax exposure under the new rules and ways to reduce or lessen taxes; and touch on how to protect beneficiaries of an inherited IRA or retirement account from a beneficiary’s divorcing spouse, bankruptcy, or substance abuse.
Bifulco began practicing law in 1995 in New York City before relocating to Midcoast Maine in 2005. Jesse formed the Penbay Estate Planning Law Center to concentrate specifically on estate planning and elder law. Over the course of his twenty-three years of practice Bifulco developed the LifeCounsel system to insure that his client’s estate plans protect family wealth and prevent family conflict.
A graduate of NYU and Brooklyn Law School, Jesse serves on the boards of P.A.W.S. and Camden Area District Nurses. He is a member of the Rockcoast Networkers, the Maine Bar Association Elder Law and Estates and Trusts Practice Sections, and national organizations devoted to estate planning and elder law.
When Bilfulco is not teaching estate planning workshops, you can find him running on the Camden Hills trails or spending time with his family – wife Kristi, and kids Adam, Hope, and Jesse Jr, and Zoe the dog.
