|Recurring Event (See all)
An event every day that begins at 12:00am, repeating until Saturday, May 4, 2019
The Camden Public Library hosts Children’s Book Week, April 29 to May 5, with support from First National Bank. The community is invited to join in the longest-running national celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading.
Focused on children of all ages, and their parents and caregivers, the 100th anniversary of Children’s Book Week will focus on the theme “Read Now • Read Forever.”
“First National Bank is happy to continue its support of the Camden Public Library’s Children’s Book Week. We believe that encouraging a love of reading from an early stage in a child’s life is important for their development. This week-long celebration is an enjoyable way to keep that love of reading alive,” said Tony McKim, President, and CEO of First National Bank.
Camden Public Library Executive Director Nikki Maounis said, “We are grateful for First National Bank’s ongoing support. The bank’s recognition of how important reading is to the success of our children and their futures means a great deal.”
This week-long celebration is part of the library’s effort to foster young readers and help ensure their future success in life. Research shows that those who do not read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2010).
During the week, children’s librarians Miss Amy and Loraine will bring books alive, dressed as characters for special story times and activities. The library invites each child to join in the experience and come dressed up as a favorite book character and to pick out a book from the giant book basket to keep! Even adults can get in on the fun.
Meanwhile, book displays will feature Maine children’s authors and illustrators, and highlight the incredible talent in our own state.
In addition, the library will host voting for the 12th Annual Children & Teen Choice Book Awards, the only national book award voted on solely by kids and teens. Voting is open throughout the week and ends June 1.
Everyone is invited to donate craft supplies to help replenish the children’s craft closet! Glue sticks, markers, scrap fabric, craft foam, buttons, beads – it all helps teach children through hands-on learning extensions.
