Artist’s Reception for Joan Marshall Losee – January Artist of the Month
Saturday, January 4 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
The Camden Public Library will be hosting an artist’s reception for Joan Marshall Losee, the January Artist of the Month, in the Picker Room on Saturday, January 4, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
Losee, a fine art painter based in Camden, has assembled a show called Beyond the Coast: A Portrait of Maine Farms and Landscapes that reflects her intrigue over the past two years with the farms and landscapes of inland Maine. “Many of my paintings reflect this interest,” says Losee, “and the experience has broadened my knowledge of Maine and its vast resources.”
Losee is a graduate of Wellesley College with a BA in Studio Art and has been painting and drawing for over 40 years. Although primarily an oil painter, she also works in watercolor, egg tempera, and pastel. She cites a love for the works of Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Robert Henri, and strives in her work to “reach the strength of expression these artists achieved.” Losee says that she likes to “choose ordinary subjects and try to demonstrate their extraordinary emotion, beauty, and presence.” She continues, “I believe one cannot break the rules until one has mastered the rules. With this in mind, I have participated in many workshops given by current artists who I admire. My paintings reflect the excellent training I have had working with these artists. I am constantly striving to increase my proficiency and maintain a freshness in my artistic expression.”
Joan Marshall Losee’s work has been featured in numerous juried shows and exhibitions in both Maine and Connecticut. Some of her current work can be viewed online: http://joanmlosee.com/
