December 13: 21 Opportunities per Week to Lessen Your Carbon Footprint

In his second talk, Bob will focus on the carbon footprint of the conventional American diet and present alternative approaches to food security that are healthier for the consumer and the ecosystem and would reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to the food system.

Speakers:

Brent Kim, MHS Brent is a Program Officer for the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future’s Food Production and Public Health Program. His research spans issues from farm to fork, with published works on industrial food animal production, food and agricultural policy, soil health, urban food systems, climate change, and a range of other food system challenges. Brent is also a frequent speaker, educator, and writer on these topics, translating the science for policymakers, journalists, and other key audiences. His work has been featured on NPR, The Baltimore Sun, Deutsche Welle, Civil Eats, Yoga Journal, and other media outlets

Robert S. Lawrence, MD, MACP

Coastal Mountains Land Trust stewardship volunteer, Bob Lawrence of Rockport graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1964 and trained in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital before serving as an epidemic intelligence service officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. After a distinguished history of appointments at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Harvard Medical School, he joined the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 1995. A year later he established the Center for a Livable Future. The Center is an interdisciplinary group of faculty, staff, and graduate students that focuses attention on the relationships between diet, food production systems, the environment, and human health. He retired to Maine in 1917 and continues to teach as an emeritus professor at Hopkins.
