Barbara Fleming, local author and Dzogchen lineage student of Lama Kunzang Tenzin, will present a new book based on her experiences as a novice Buddhist on Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 pm. The Backwards Buddhist is an enjoyable, serious yet lighthearted spiritual memoir. Fleming will read a brief selection before explaining her purpose in writing The Backwards Buddhist. Printmakers Exhibit in March Printmakers Exhibit in March

The faculty of the Midcoast Printmakers will exhibit their unique work in printmaking in a group show entitled “Impressions” in the Jean Picker Room, March 2 through March 30. A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, March 6, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The public is warmly invited to attend and ask questions about process, materials, and intention relative to the wide variety of hand pulled prints on display. Interested in learning more about how to find great stocks to invest? The Camden Public Library hosts an informal group interested in the ins and outs of personal investment. The group calls itself “Mainely Stocks” and will help members find great investment ideas and  uncover the best websites and resources on the Internet. Beginners are more than welcome. The Midcoast Audubon Society will host a talk on Windpower and Birds on Thursday, March 18, at 6:30 pm. Richard Podolsky and Mark DiGirolamo, ornithologists and also residents of Rockport and Rockland, are pleased to share their experiences studying birds and bats at literally dozens of wind power projects all around the US. The Everyman Repertory Theatre will perform "Conversations at Midnight" at the Camden Public Library on Friday evening, March 19, at 7:00 pm. The play, written by Edna St. Vincent Millay  in 1936, will be performed as a staged reading. Tickets are $15 each and can be obtained by calling the Everyman Repertory Theater box office at (207) 236 0173. The performance is co-sponsored by the Camden Public Library. Read more…

The library hosts "The Sandal Seller," a marionette show performed by Toki Oshima, on Saturday, March 20 at 10:30 am. "The Sandal Seller" is a Japanese folktale. The show will be followed by crafts for kids. Visit the Kids Page for more information.

The Camden Public Library is alive with homegrown music, with its Songswap Series and Songwriters Sessions scheduled throughout the winter. Musicians are welcome to participate in both the Songswaps and the Songwriters Sessions. The next Songswap is Saturday afternoon, March 20, 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The Library will host a several free Sunday Matinee movies through the rest of the winter and into the spring. “We’ll be picking up where the Opera House series left off,” said Ken Gross, Program Director at the library. “We know there are a lot of movie fans in this community, and we have an enthusiastic volunteer, Eddie Adelman, to help get this movie series off the ground.” The next movie will be “Billy Elliot” on Sunday, March 14, at 2:30 pm. The library will begin hosting a Senior College Writers Group on Monday, March 22, at 9:30 am in the 2nd floor meeting room. The group will meet on the fourth Monday of the month. The purpose of the writers group is to share and give feedback on creative work in progress. The group welcomes new members. The meetings are co-sponsored with Maine Senior College but no fee is required. Questions may be directed to Nina Holland 470 7473 or Marilyn Muth 596 7562.

In recognition of Women’s History Month in March, local author Jim Mitchell will be speaking at the Camden Public Library on his new book Reopening Pandora’s Box: Women’s Influence in Myth and Reality. The book is an “accessible, personable overview of women’s influence throughout history,” according art historian Lucie Bauer. The publisher describes the book as “an upbeat examination of women who lived independently, who refused to accept ‘no,’ and who have influenced our lives.” Read more…

At the March meeting of the Camden Philosophical Society’s monthly reading group two essays will be discussed. The Camden Public Library will host a talk on “Efficiency Maine” on Thursday, March 25, at 6:30 pm. Efficiency Maine is the state’s subsidy program for installing weatherization and other energy-saving hardware. It is a statewide effort to promote more efficient use of electricity, help Maine residents and businesses reduce energy costs, and improve Maine’s environment. Efficiency Maine is funded by electricity consumers and administered by the Maine Public Utilities Commission. Read more…

Priyadarshi George will present an evening of tai ji, meditation, and qi gong  at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday, March 30, 6:30 pm. Tai ji, also known as t’ai chi ch’uan, is a movement-art that helps find an inner gracefulness, while providing gentle and effective exercise that stimulates the flow of healing energy. Enjoy a relaxing and energizing evening with Priyadarshi, who will discuss these meditative disciplines along with some guided experiential learning. Priyadarshi has studied Tai Ji, meditation, and Qi Gong for over three decades. Read more…

The Camden Public Library will once again present a series of events to celebrate our maritime heritage during “Maritime Month,” in April, 2010. There will be historians, authors, yacht designers, artists, exhibits, and children’s programs throughout April at the library. The events are supported by the generous assistance of On The Water in Maine and Rankin’s Hardware of Camden. The exhibits and related speakers are provided through partnership with the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport. Read more…

Next Songwriter Session April 13 Next Songwriter Session April 13

In preparation for an appearance at the June Coffeehouse, local songwriters are meeting monthly at the Camden Public Library for the Songwriter Sessions. The sessions are open to everyone and will culminate in an Open Mike style performance on June 3. The Sessions are on the second Tuesday of the month, 6:00 to 8:00 pm on March 9, April 13, and May 11. Cost for each session is $10, and the sessions are led by professional singer-songwriter Mehuman Jonson. Read more…

Library Again Earns “Four-Star” Rating! Library Again Earns “Four-Star” Rating!

The Camden Public Library has once again earned a “Four Star” Rating from the Library Journal. The four-star rating is awarded on the basis of four measures of service, and compares the use of the library to other libraries of similar size across the country. The four service areas used in evaluating the library are the number of individual visits, circulation, attendance at events, and internet use, all evaluated on an annual, per capita, basis. “We are very pleased to have earned the four-star rating, not just once, but two years in a row,” said library director Nikki Maounis. “With an average of 500 people in and out our doors every day, we are one of the busiest places in town.” Read more…
