Computer Resources at the Library

Internet and Word-Processing

The Camden Public Library has 7 public computer terminals equipped with Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Office 2000 suite (Access, Excel, Publisher, Powerpoint, Word). In addition, we have three computers for short-term email access.

Please note that demand for these computers is very high, and it is not unusual to have to wait to get on a computer. Please be sure to sign in at the circulation desk before using any of these computers.

For those patrons with their own laptops, we offer a wide variety of methods to access the Internet directly. We have wireless access throughout the library, and several access points for Ethernet or dial-up connections.

You must bring your own hardware and accessories, as we cannot supply them. Please be familiar with your methods of connectivity, as we cannot provide support.

FCSearch:The Foundation Center’s Database on CD-ROM

FCSearch, The Foundation Center’s Database on CD-ROM, gives access to the Foundation Center’s database of close to 50,000 U.S. foundations and corporate givers; the names and foundation affiliations of over 200,000 trustees, officers, and donors who make the funding decisions at these institutions; and descriptions of more than 200,000 newly reported grants.

A number of non-profit organizations in the Midcoast area funded the acquisition of FCSearch and worked with the Maine Philanthropy Center and the Camden Public Library to make available this valuable funding information to this area.

Anyone may use the FCSearch database; please call 236-3440 for an appointment.

The Philanthropy Center also has made available a variety of print resources; ask at the circulation desk in order to access these materials.

The Maine Philanthropy Center serves grantmakers and grantseekers in Maine by providing information on national and local trends in philanthropy, maintaining a full philanthropic research library in Portland, assisting affiliate libraries in Camden, Machias and Houlton, and hosting workshops in philanthropy, development budgets, proposal writing, program planning and computer research around the state. The Center’s mission is to serve the entire state. It relies on its web site to disseminate information quickly to anyone with access to a computer. The web page has become a well-used research tool, enabling organizations seeking funding and grantmakers seeking information to extend their reach on the World Wide Web.

Other CD-ROM’s and Databases

The Camden Public Library offers a number of other elctronic informational resources to its patrons:

MARVEL
MARVEL is a web-based database of full-text magazine, journal and newspaper articles that is available to our library patrons through state funding. From the MARVEL home page, follow the directions under "remote access" to log on.
Family Tree Maker’s Family Archives
The Family Tree Maker’s CD-ROM contains images of the pages of the six books entitled "English Origins of New England Families". These books are comprised of some of the most sought-after immigrant-origin articles from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. The collected articles reference more than 143,000 individuals and include family histories traced back to their English roots, some as far back as the 11th century.
